What's with these rims?

I've discussed it before, but never really gotten a straight answer. I'm looking at getting some 17" Cragar SS'. I've heard that they would fit fine, others said you need spacers. The 17x8's have 4 1/2" Backspacing...and the 17x9 and 9.5's have 6" backspacing. I want to get the widest tire in there, w/o mods, and no scrapping or rubbing. I heard 17x8 would be the best bet. Now, would 17x8 w/ 4 1/2" backspace be sticking out the fender wells? Would it need spacers, etc.? I also plan on using 275x45x17 Firestone Firehawk rubber. Would those tires work fine w/ the 17x8 wheels, if they fit?

Thanks a lot.

your asking a question that can easily be found through searching....it's been beaten to death.

no those tires will not fit properly on a 8".

I've searched, and could not find anything. As for the 275's not fitting an 8" rim...

17x8's w/ 275/40/R17's.

I just don't know about the backspacing and those rims.

you should not put a 275 tire on an 8" rim, get a wider rim and do it right if you want to run wide tires your making it very unsafe by doing so. not to say it can't be done but it shouldn't.

backspacing will vary from rim to rim but you can get them to bolt on directly. they are expensive though and heavy.

How wide would 255's be on a 17x8? Any pics? I don't want it to look like Bicycle wheels, so to speak...lol...I want to be somewhat beefy. I'd go w/ 17x9 or 17x9.5, but Cragar doesn't make the SS' w/ 4.5 backspacing in those sizes. Only 6". I *think* that would stick out of the wells.

19doug90:

Are those 255x40x16? Also, what's the backspacing on those rims? Even though stock, do they have a #? I don't wan the 17x8's @ 4.5" backspace to stick out.

So, if they are, then 255x40x17's on a 17x8 wheel would work just fine...correct?

Thanks!!

Kandied: That link doesn't work. I have a calculator from here:
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Anyway, I just want to know if that rim will simply stick out of the wells or not. The backspacing gets me confused, and from what I've READ, 4.5" w/ 17x8's will be perfect. 255x40xZR17's should work w/ that combo too.

Am I right, or what? lol

theyre 255/50R16's so 40 sounds about right for a 17" rim
Forget what stock back spacing is ill do a quick search for ya though

EDIT : Quote "The stock wheels were 16x8 with 4.5" backspacing front and rear, and a +0mm front offset / +16mm rear offset. Stock tires are 245/50/16."

thats the best i can do for you i know you can play with some of those numbers when switching wheels but not sure exactly what you can do and why.

EDIT AGAIN : 255/45/17's would give you the same size as i have now. 40's would give you a little less side wall but would be closer to stock which is 245/50

Thanks a lot man!! Exactly what I wanted to know. So now I know 4.5 will not stick out at all, and probably look just like yours, just in 17's.

Thanks for the help!

i would assume so, give it a little bit just encase someone a lot more knowledgeable chimes in to say otherwise.
