Hp gains with SS hood?
I have an 84 Z28 that i put up a fairly built up 350 in. Im trying to decide between a 2.5-3inch cowl hood or an SS hood. The car is going to be painted gunmetal grey with 2 black racing strips. Also it will have 91-92 GFX most likely, just curious which hood you guys like better? AND are there any NOTICABLY performance gains with the ram air of the SS hood? Thanks

you would either have to cut out the scoop (for air) or you would have to find a functioning one, because most are sold as "fakes"
as far as I know their aren't any hp differences, people will agrue either way, the big difference will be the lightness of hood compared to your steel hood; less weight = faster car

id go ss hood for a cleaner look and im not a big fan of big cowls, a very small one maybe but otherwise they obstruct the natural flow of the car, imo.
there is a low pressure zone infront of the windshied and this is where the cowl hood gets it's air from. It is more functional than an ss hood would be. You will see a gain form either when moving, but how much I don't know.

i cut the back of my ss hood out.. i gunkd down my engine and cleaned everything up the other day.. and leaving sitting at a light there was ALOT of vapor and heat i could see coming out of the cowl opening and onto the windshield.. its definatly made a cooling improvement considering air actually has somewhere to go. maybe someday ill make a vid of it.. its pretty badass

whenever i fill my tranny without a funnel and spill a little on the valve covers, it slowly burns off and the smoke escapes through the teardrop cowl. Everybody on the road looks at me like im overheating

haha i had an STI WRX pull up to me last week and they wanted to race (which would rip my car a new one).. anyhow i was reving my car to about 5k and alot of steam was shooting out the back of the cowl.. needless to say they backed off.. guess it was scary or something :P

I've got the SS Hood on my car, I don't notice any real performance gains, but I do notice that the motor runs cooler.
My main problem (I guess you could call it) is that the opening for the hood is above stock hood level, so my open air cleaner isn't really getting the actual 'ram air' that you would expect to get with a Hood scoop.
Its more for a appearance aspect than anything else, but it does turn heads.
