Wanting to install hood locks on my car....got a question..

Ok....

I might be installing a set of hood locks on my car. I painted my car about 7 months ago. If I decide to go through with this....and start to drill the holes in my hood...will my paint Spider Web? Chip? Shatter? Crack? Someone was saying to stick tape on the paint so the paint won't crack. Is this true? Anyone with any experience please post. Thanks!

yup....use masking tape over the hole. Then drill a pilot hole first and then drill out the larger hole, shouldn't be a cause for concern and the pain shouldn't crack, spider web, etc.

yeah make sure you go through every size drill bit till you get to the desired size cause that will definatly minimize the chance of any cracking. Also be careful about where exactly you want the hole to be when your done.

I think hood locks would be sweet with that hood especially if there chrome cuase it would set off the black paint.

Also, remember to use SHARP drill bits and try to have something on the underside of the hood, like a block of wood. That will help with the bit go through the hood easier. Sort of like drilling in wood, when you dont want the wood to splinter on the back side you use some sort of backer board. I hope I explained that okay.

I guess I'm still having trouble seeing how the hood locks are installed. There are 4 plates....looks like they don't screw together....and it looks like in order to install these...the under side of the hood has to be flat too (for the bottom plate) I don't want hood pins...even though they have a scuff plate, the pins can still scrath the paint......I might just buy a set from Autozone, check them out......and take'em back if I don't like how they are installed. I love how you installed yours 88AZIroc, but I just want mine to me closer up to the nose, like I showed you in the picture of my brothers Z28.

I'm not saying they look bad....but I think when they are closer to the SS Scoop....the locsk take away from the scoop...I like'em further away....plus you don't have to lean over the hood to unlock it....Anyways....I went ahead and bought a set today....I guess I'll just have to wait until spring to see if they will work out for me.

I"d use a set of Dzus fasteners but thats me. Much cleaner install than using pins.

When drilling, use strips of 2" tape on your hood, use a center punch to minimize "drill walk" and use a new uni bit. I have never had it damage the paint that way.

yo, I like where you want to put them too but it seems like thats like on top of the back of your headlight. you might want to look at where you are interfering with the underpart of the hood

It kind of looks like that from just the crappy paint shop I did......here is exaclty where I want them....I installed a set of hood pins in my brothers 87 Z28 with no problems. (I'm going with locks though)

I STILL don't like them way out there like that. Any thoughts on whether the hood will rise up in the middle at high speeds since there isn't going to be much support in the middle.....Unless you're using the hood latch as well? Then you wouldn't need hood locks right? I'm using 4 pins since it's a lift-off style hood but they're more centered then yours, by about 6 inches towards the middle more.

With hood locks, the latch is required. My hood dosen't rise in the middle at highspeeds, it's more towards the sides....where the headlight pockets are....that's why I want a set of hood locks. I don't want hood pins, even though they come with the scratch plate... I could still scratch my hood with a pin. I think a key would be much safer and would look a little more smooth.

I don't care if you don't like where they are located...I just wanted to see if anyone has installed a set of hood locks out towards the front of the hood instead of more towards the middle. Also, since you have a lift off hood....your not supposed to use a latch....and I can see how you have to use 4 pins...because it's a lift off.

I checked out your site xpndbl3, where you installed your hood pins at looks pretty descent....not really that far in....do you have any pictures of the frame rail where you installed them? I'm unable to get my car out because it's like 9 degree's here and it's hibernating....haha

with my hood pins, there is a hole you can already use in the engine bay......mine are in the classic position.

That looks pretty good....

Alot of guys just take out their rubber stop along the radiator support and just install the pin there....is that what you did? Because the location looks pretty good.

If you want, i can take a pic

F-bodee.....looks like you removed the hood stoppers and installed the pins where the rubber stoppers used to be in that hole.
