The cost to paint my GTA, ouch!!!
I have to say that I was surprised to hear when my former boss told me his paint job was 5K for his old truck. Now that I have taken my GTA to get estimates I see why. The two estimates I got were US$5300 and US$4300. The first one includes a complete strip down and doing all the jambs (hood, doors, hatch). The second will only strip as needed and will also do the jambs. Both will remove all GFX, nose piece and wing.
We are talking show finish here but is this about what I am expected to pay? I hate to paint the car and do a half fast job but these prices are not what I was expecting to get.
What do you all think?

Factory Flame Red Metalic. This is pretty much a resto job for factory look.
By show finish I mean some shops will paint everything but do not touch the jambs. Then if you want to show the car you have that ugly overspray in the jambs. And that is what I don't want.

i can get pretty much any color that i want, other than pearl for US$1800 thats because a girl that my sister works with has a dad who owns a body shop. im hopeing he will paint my car sunset orange metallic for about 1500$ i dont know whos it was on here, but that color is amazing, its either that or candy apple red. 5000$ is absolutly ridiculous. thats what a body shop quoted me for electron blue. that was compltely striping the car though. they wanted to take off my door panels, pull out my windows, replace the weatherstriping, all that stuff, but they wouldnt put the GFX back onto the car because they didnt want to get blamed for scratching the rockers. body shops think that we dont know what they are trying to do. you dont have to pull out the doorpanels and windows for a paintjob, i mean isnt that what plastic and masking tape were made for?

You didn't mention what type of paint or finish you would be getting. The quote can sound low or high depending on that. I have seen awesome paint jobs for around 1-3,000 and heard of some people paying upwards of 18,000 for paint (not even for the Kamelion paints).
you get what you pay for
if its a base clear, complete strip down then expect 4k-5k. If you REALLY want a nice job, long lasting gloss, take it to a good shop. DO your homework with the shop you select, and I'll bet
you will be ALLOT happier with the end result. DO NOT take it to maaco or any other scuff and shoot shop.

body shops think that we dont know what they are trying to do
-----------------
The paint I am not sure but both do use clear coat and are garanteed for life of ownership.
And BTW I will NEVER take it to a Maaco of Facto-Bake or any those cheapo shops.

my paintjob on the car right now was done by earl sheib(sp?) and the pillar behind the window is all fisheyed, this paintjob was done in october of 02, i mean it was 400$ but i didnt get it painted, the previos owner did. i guess a cheap paintjob is ok when you just need something to cover up primer. i think that 5000$ is a great price if its getting striped to bare metal and everything, but for them to just sand it and redo it, its way too much.

Yep, complete strip down to the bare metal. Then primer, base coat, clear coat, sanding off the orange peel and polishing.
F-Body Tim, black cars look great, that is if you can keep it clean. I wish I could change mine to black but this baby is getting it's original color. You know, gotta keep it original (only on the outside).

That sounds great Ozzy. I like you are going witht he factory color, and the price doesnt sound bad at all. I went to your website, nice car. I also loved your message on the front page.
Absolutely agree.
Why a GTA? You have to own one to know why we love them. It's not just the looks and the ride, but the pride that comes from owning a specially packaged, limited production touring car

Now you all see why.
Thanks, factory color is the only way to go with a GTA for authenticity.
I might just have to bite the bullet and pay at least 4K for the job. Still, I might have to shop around some more, I just wish I had connections like some of you.

Sounds like he wants a quality paint job not some 400 dollar get-you-by paint job. Painting a car right takes time and you're paying for that time.

Speaking of time, both would take about 5 to 6 weeks. I have heard that some shops use a diferent paint for the plastic pieces because of the flexibility of the material. That paint is not cheap either. On the estimate the price of the painting alone is $2300 the rest is prep labor.
By the way it looks I am expecting to pay no less than $4K. Of course I have seen $10K off-body restoration paint jobs, so this is not so bad.

That sounds a little on the high side. Mine was $6100, but $1500 of that was the ghost flames. The main expense isn't the paint, but how much work the body needs. Mine was rough, so they kept it for over a month to get it looking nice. After, they said they said they got ripped off for having to do so much work for such a "low" price.

one of the reasons you do some work yourself, remover bumpers, lights and little things like turn signals. they charge you a lot just to remove the tail lights when one of us can do it in 5 minutes they say it takes 2 hours. take the bumpers and things off so they can do everything. it will save you soem money, and it will get a thurough job, but then again for 4k you should be getting one to begin with
While the old "you get what you pay for" is true, when you're talking about getting a car painted a lot of that money is labor. If you do the prep work alone you're probably looking at a good paint job for around $1000 depending on what kind of shops you have around you. Also yes please make sure your painter is smart enough to use the right mix or whatever it is when they paint the plastic pieces... they will spider web bad if not..

Cmon guys not cryin now, a good paintjob cost a lot of money, i know, i do this every damn day. For a compete repaint, stripping and jambing, you do need to take hte door panels off all lights and trim wings and whatever you can take off, nose and bumper. Much cleaner paint job that way.
5 grand is not that much, just simple supplies will run about a 1000 or so for the car, paint clear, primer, paper, all hte little things add up, then its the labor, a lot of labor goes in, prep, paint and final polish and cleanup, its am immense ammount of work, hence the price.
And it fully applies, you get what you pay for, its that simple, and dont try to dick the owner of the shop over, cuz he will get you back.
We did a mustang tho, a yellow to Dodge blue, for 5500, with new doors fenders and trunklid, jambed and all, but it was a convertible, so the price floated down from the new parts

I could do that but then again I have no time with the other projects around the house.
I do appreciate the input guys, I guess I won't feel so bad in spending that kind of money for a quality job.

My budy paid $3000 for his chevelle and the funny thing is that is with a friends hook up. But everything was done to a show finish with PPG all around. Looks increadable.

I think it also depends upon the time of year and the area in which you are located. Summer time (busy time) in Alabama will most likely always be less than winter time (slow time) in So. Cal.
Here's what I am getting and the cost:
Complete strip down
2 coats etching primer
3 coats (as needed) primer
Block sand between each coat
Color and clear is Kandy Brandywine (as of now) but Boyd Red is looking awful nice too.
They are installing the SS hood
Installing the 91-92 Hi rise spoiler
Shaving the key locks
Flattening the fuel door (I am installing a popper)
Some minor bodywork
The job will look like it was done that way from the factory, as far as originality goes, but the quality will be much better.
Now I already stripped the car, no interior, no drivetrain, etc...
I am getting this for $3k from a friend of a friend who owns a really good shop. I was quoted from most other places in So cal from anywhere from $5k-$15k
Also to those getting their cars completely stripped make sure they use etching primer! If not the paint will not hold.
