Hey everyone,
Today we had some good weather and I was off work, so I got some work done on the IROC. I drilled the holes for and loosely mounted the 91-92 ground effects. The gaps you can see are because they aren't bolted in yet, just the studs through the holes. I can't wait to get them painted. What do you guys think?

The current plan is to have it on the road for about a month this summer, from mid May til mid June. That way I can attend ThirdGen Fest '04 and the Midwest F-Body Meet. By then, I hope to have the ground effects painted, as well as have my TCI transmission cooler mounted and my three AutoMeter Phantom gauges mounted in the a-pillar (trans, water, and A/F ratio). I will also have new tires.
As for the holes, it wasn't hard at all. They were a little off, but I was able to use a file to correct it. Make some templates out of cardboard, it will help a lot.
I changed it because I always liked the 91-92 ground effects. As some of you may know, I started off with a 92 RS before the IROC. The only thing I miss about that car is the ground effects. I had always wanted to change to the 91-92 ones, but never had the chance since my IROC was my daily driver. But now that I have a second car, I have time to do longer project type things with the IROC. And since the nose needed to be repainted anyway, I thought it would be a good time to swap.

my person opinion
you screwed everything up
not that i am anything of an original ****, because i hate originality...
but your car was sweet stock with the blue stripes... now you added the 91-92 gfx... which means that you need to get rid of the IROC-Z on the doors cuz it just looks ghetto with iroc-z on the doors and 91-92 graphics.
on top of that... now u gotta upgrade the rims, cuz you know... those rims don't suit the 91-92 gfx...
sooooooo yeah
:P

I don't need to get rid of the IROC decals, and I won't.
I also don't need to change the rims, and I won't (until I can afford some Firehawk's perhaps)

Andy, I say leave everything purple. It looks sweet. Also, the blue door ground effect really matches the blue stripe on the body. I'd leave it that way!!!

Blah, should of left it the way it was, it doesn't look like an iroc anymore.
Everyone and their brother changes the ground effects to the new style.
Sorry, not trying to be a stock ****, just dont like it.
and what are you going to put where the rs emblem is?
It does look like you have done a great job though
Heres a little tip for you, while the car is being worked on, take out your inner fenders and spray them black again, it helps restore that new car look.

dude your car was beautiful before you did that now its....yea, well i hope you at least put Z28 badges and the blue pinstripe back on...because those RS ones arent working out
I'm not a huge fan of the gfx swap, but give the guy a break. His first thirdgen was an RS. I think it's gonna look pretty good myself once it's painted. I would get some different emblems IMO. That's just my .02 though. Doin a good job on the swap bro, looks good!

Kick @ss ...the RS emblems will have to go tho! personally I say shave the emblems all together and leave the IROC on the door wouldn't be hard at all since your paintin em anyways... and yes firehawks or some bigger iroc wheels would be rockin!
Oh and while your at it shave that indented strip in the rear bumper..

to all the haters.....just remember his "old" ground effects are now on my 84 camaro. so it has been recycled all around. now my car looks a million times better that i got rid of those uglyass 82-84 ground effects. now this thing looks more muscular and more modern for sure.

and he is having his car on the road for a month becuz he wants to go to the previously mentioned car events....and then he is probably gonna go back and work on modifying his car some more....

I guess I should have said this before, but the RS emblems came on the ground effects. They will not be on the finished car
I will have IROC badges there, just like I had before. I will be removing the blue stripe when I get the effects painted. Then when they are on the car I will decide on whether or not to put a new blue stripe on.
If you don't know what it looked like before, check my webpage and/or cardomain page, the links are in my sig. I have plenty of pics there.
What? So if someone has an IROC and they get, say, a new hood, its not an IROC anymore?
Its just an IROC with updated ground effects.
The car will only be on the road for about a month because thats all I can afford. I bought a winter beater this year because I drive 35 miles each way to and from school five days a week. I was using almost a half tank of gas a day in the IROC. School goes through the summer, so I will have to keep driving the Cavalier for school and I can't afford to insure both for the whole summer.

Yeah i know what u mean about driving back and forth to class.........i am at class 5 days per week. I only used my camaro for daily driving for 6 months, then bought a beater, then that broke down so now i have a 96 cherokee for everyday. Sad thing is, my cherokee would beat my IROC in a drag race, but I like driving my camaro much more.
I like those GFX though, I wouldnt mind tossing a set on mine.

i think the hood analogy is not right for this particular situation.
For me anyways, those ground effects just scream 91-92(well, thats cause they are) And it seems to me that it will look busy with the new ground effects and the iroc decal on the door.
Before, nothing stood out on the side cept for the iroc decal, now there will be two identifying items almost in the same place.
I think it would look nice without the iroc decal on the door,
But its your car, and its a very nice car, i am just stating an opnion that everyone is entitled too.

Guess I'll need to wait and see the final product before I know for sure. Probably not something I would do, but I admire the fact that your willing to do something that other people wouldnt, and doing the work on your own. Thats one of the best parts of modding,... doing it yourself.
Also, what about the chin spoiler?
Keep us updated, I know your not on the site everyday, but you know, stop in once and a while.

i really like and think your doing a great job...i dont see what the big fuss is about...its gonna look the same as before just with little groves in the gfx...I dont see how you can like the look of iroc gfx compared to 91-92 gfx...they are just upgraded that made them look better is the way i see it...but i guess this is why there are such things as opinions heh
Anyway cant wait to see the finished product

I like the 85-90 GFX better, but it still looks sweet.
Not sure why the hood analogy doesn't work.
It's still most definetely an Iroc. It's funny how many people come outta the wordwork and say how Iroc and Z28 clones are an OK thing to do, yet change your GFX and now it's not an Iroc.
I'd be willing to bet its still the same car, hmmmm maybe he can check the VIN....then we'll know for sure!
As for not liking the way it looks with the decal, well that's opinion, but has nothing to do with it being an "Iroc".
The wheels are the best wheels Chevy ever put on a car....I say keep 'em.
....the Stock **** has spoken.....

so everyone with a 91-92 high rise spoiler dosent have a z28, or an iroc anymore? SAME THING who cares it looks good, if you change a motor no one ever says anything bad, its just ground effects give him a break.

Did you get a new front bumper gfx too? I'm pretty sure the 91-92 nose was a bit longer then the IROC.
Looks good, nice progress

I am partial to all black ROCs. That is probably why mine is still red, that and a paint job that costs mucho dinaro!
Loved your car before and will after.
IROCthe5.7L, nice ride.
One day I will have a photosig!

The 91-92 nose wasn't really any longer, but the license plate area is ever so slightly different, and of course, by the wheels it has the openings like the rockers.
....right?
*edit*
...same nose...diff GFX.

.And i for one just think alot of people try to clone the 91-92 style, which i understand cause they are really nice.
I just wish more people would leave their cars like they were, they sure dont need any help looking better.
And let me say this again, i love andys car, i have seen it in person, very nice.
So no hate here, just an opnion, and i am sure he will do it right and make it look very nice.

LOL, i just realized i typed "it's not an iroc anymore"
I meant it wont look like an iroc anymore, sorry about that, now i understand why people got a tad heated.
Really nice looking car there, but then it brings up another point, it looks like a 91-92z that someone slapped some iroc decals on.

I do understand your point, it would at first glance look like ES87's car was a 91 92 Z that he put stickers on. Most people would assume that being its easier to install stickers then it is to change the body panels which is about what most lame *** people do (sticker upgrades). Everyone thinks my 92 RS is a Z since I added the spoiler and grill.

i say don't paint it...gotta love the turqoise and purple gfx...has that lost in the 80's look
haha yea right, get that thing painted quick....it's lookin nice, although i loved that blue stripe you had at the bottom of your car, just cause it made it stand out from every other black iroc out there...(i didnt read all the posts, so i didnt see if you said you're putting the stripe back on or not, but i'm guessing you're not)

I did get the front valence as well, but I just didn't put it on yet. The nose isn't any different, but the lower ground effect is.
My car won't look like a 91-92 Z28 with IROC stickers, it will look like a 91-92 Z28 with IROC stickers, an IROC 3-piece spoiler, IROC hood louvers, and IROC rims. Not to mention, the 89 interior.
Or it will just look like an IROC with 91-92 ground effects
I'm not getting heated, I asked for opinions and I totally understand that not everyone will like it. I always tell people "Its your car, do what you want", so now I plan to do the same
ES87's car is the one that inspired me to put these on actually. I love the look of that car. Did you get a new spoiler? I thought you had something different on there.

(Where's the blush smilie?) I had a T/A wrap around wing, but it went deep south on me, and I had a couple spare 91/92 Z28 wings around at the time, which beat my warped up wraparound.

Ahh poop.
I guess I don't have any IROC style exterior stuff left on my car, but how is an IROC any different than a 85-87 Z28 externally save for the stickers/stripes/wheels and two tone?

Seriously though, I can see where 9d1 is coming from, that was the main reason I kept the stock wheels for so long. (Does keeping them in the garage count? They are near the car at least...
)
