i had the same problem, i tryed all those bug and tar removers, never worked....
so i took a rag , soaked it with hot water, rubbed it in to break it up a little bit, sprayed it with the tar remover bottle, and gently scraped it off with a metal spoon.
worked nicely for me.... just go slow and take your time.

alright well after a little research, dentatured alcahol easily gets rid of Tree Sap, and anything petrolium based gets rid of Tar. But what is petrolium based besides vasoline?

i strongly recommend WD-40 also
if you just try to scrub the tar off w/ a rag all it does is smear it...shoot it w/ wd-40, let it sit 5-10 seconds and it comes off with no effort

I use Dupont 3812-S. It is a fast dry enamel reducer that does not harm your paint but is excellent for removing tar, sap, old glue, body side molding glue, old double stick tape. My brother works at a body shop and thats how I found out about it. Apparently, it is what a lot of the body shops use to remove that junk safely from the paint.
I have been using it for about 7 years and the stuff is awesome. You will have to get it from a body shop supply store or you can probably order it online somewhere. I buy mine in the Chicago area from Terrance Auto body supply. They only sell it in a gallon can and it is about 15 bucks, but worth every penny.

Will any type of enamel reducer work? I have some left over reducer from when the car got painted. I've got wood sap on my windshield and hood, tried WD-40, it did nothing. either did goo gone. Thes Canadian tree's make some wicked sap.

Rubbing alcohol works great on pine tree sap. Get the sap off ASAP as it will eat through the clear coat if it stays on for any length of time.

I tried a clay bar on my car one time when i had some sap on it and all it did was smear it. I used fully concentrated zaino car wash soap and it took it off w/o any probs.

you should obviously wash the area before you try to clay it. no sense in using a product if you haven't first tried to wash the car. you wouldn't wax a car and then wash it would you?
