String neons.. how long do they last?

I've worked with two brands of string neon, and over the course of a couple months, they start to get dark around the metal wire that wraps around the neon. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Is there a difference between different brands in how long they last? Anyone have good experiences with some string neons that last a long time without fading?

Electroluminecent cable? I had some on my computer case for years and it never got dim but then again, it wasn't on all the time. Being Seen is where I got mine from if it's what I think you're talking about.

Yes, it's EL cable that I'm talking about. The arrows below show the thin metal wire that wraps around the length of the cable. If you look closely, you can see it on all of the cables.

Both sets I've had in my car ended up looking faded because of this wire. The wire itself doesn't light up, which is fine, but it almost seems like corrosion of some sort spreads off of the wire over time (rust maybe?) which really makes the cable look like crap. I'll have to try some higher end cables like Street Glow and see if I get better results.
