Paint amounts.

I have a gallon of paint, and a gallon of primer.

How much of each do you suppose I should reduce to completely cover a car and still have a little insurance. The paint was cheap, so I could reduce it all. But I would rather not.

Would a quart do it?

If it helps... 4 parts paint, 1 part reducer.

Also, do I add the hardener to the paint and then reduce it. Or do I put the hardener in the reduced paint.

whats the tech sheet say, you must follow there mixing instructions or else it may never harden or worse gel in your gun while spraying.

if its 4:1:1 get a paint mixing container that is graduated for paint look for the ration on the side of it 4:1:1: then decide how much you want to mix say numer 5 then fill with paint to number 5 then catalysist to 5 and the reducer to 5 and mix well. you add all parts together in container and the strain into gun.

your tech sheet will also tell you how long " pot life" mixed sitting in the pot waiting to be sprayed so if it 2 hours you can mix alot if its 1 hour mix less you may not be able to spray it all in an hour.

Ahh Jeff... just the guy I was hoping would respond. Us amateaurs painters gotta unite... or something.

Cheapo ebay paint, no tech sheet.

I got the graduated paint canisters, and what not. And I found out in what order the reducer and hardener needs to be added to prevent the paint from "shocking" and get globbulated and gelly.

I think I got most of it figured out in the way of how to mix the paint and all that shizzle.

But how much paint did you use... For, say, your primer coat? I just wanted to know, roughly, how much it takes to cover the whole car.

I want to seperate my paint into two containers, and then store one, and reduce the other. That way I have paint left over to touch up my paint if it gets nicked or dented.

i was mixing my primer which i think was 2:1 i would mix about to the 6 line. i did that about 3 times for the entire car and gfx that was the epoxy coat, i used 1/2 gallon total. the 2k priner i used about 1/2 so far and will shoot three coats this weekend on the body to get ready for wet sand since all my body work is complete.

did you search the web on the manufacture? should have a p sheet. some time the pot life or how long it is good mixed is not very long so mixing smaller amounts may be your best choice and then seal the can when you done.

Good job on buying something with no brand at all, and no data information, really the best way to start off a paintjob.

On a slightly more informed tip, chances are you're going to probably need the full gallon, cheaper paints dont do the best for coverage, and at 4:1 ratio thats barely over a gallon sprayable where most paints are 1:1 or 1/2:1 at least, im using an hvlp gun and the car i sprayed not too long ago pretty much used a full gallon of napa crossfire red for full coverage, having a little bit more wouldnt have hurt either.

I am putting all my money into the drivetrain. I made a pact with myself not to spend over 200 on paint. And I succeded.

It may be ugly, but it will be fast.
