Why all the rims?
I guess I'm the only one who likes the stock rims still
. I found a website that sells replica's of the stock rims in the larger sizes, shined up like an aftermarket rim. I think i'll get some 17" ones to replace the 15 inchers on my RS. For some reason all these aftermarket rims just don't match our cars at all in my opinion. I polished my rims and everyone at school thinks I have these awesome aftermarket rims now, even though they're the stockers.
Does anyone else agree these "torque thrust" or the corvette wheels or whatever they may be just look terrible? I mean, the designers chose that style for a reason.
I also have rear window louvers
*Gasp*
though, and I think they look awesome as well, so maybe i'm just weird.
Here's a picture of my car, before the polished rims. I'm proof that not every 16 year old first time car owner trashes their vehicle. I care for it like it was a child
. No mods yet, I had to pay for most of it, so i'm broke.

Stock wheels, mudflaps AND the rear window louvers........
3 strikes and your out...
Have your own style, if you like the stock wheels keep them on there, your own style is what makes your thirdgen yours........

Thanks for the praise guys. And flyinlow, with that r*cer wing on your car you struck out a long time ago
. I'm just messin with ya. You've got a badass car, i'd trade my L03 for your LS1 anyday, i guess that makes up for it.
I'm not a huge fan of the mudflaps either, but then again, I live in washington.... It rains, and rains, and rain and rains. They serve their purpose.
Technically if i got those bigger replicas, I could say i didn't have stock rims
. Anyway, it runs well, and i'm 16 year old backyard mechanic with a minimum wage job, I do want I can.
Thanks for hearing me out and not flaming me guys, and don't take me seriously flyinlow, your car rocks.
Another pic.

I don't think that it's a matter of not liking the stock rims it's a matter of liking aftermarket rims SO much better... it's not that I don't like my 15 by 7 turbo-fin wheels it's just that I like bigger and chrome better than smaller and stock any day. Also, I hate window louvers and mudflaps. And you can add me to the list of 16-yr-olds who pamper their cars... I had to pay for ALL of mine ($6250) and pay insurance and gas and for all the work I do to it... I won't even drive my car to school unless it's an emergency. Oh, and if ppl at ur school think ur stock RS rims are aftermarket... wow... that's sad.

Iroc..... Two questions.
1. How did you find someone that would insure you.
2. How do you pay the insurance.
The only thing that stopped me from getting a 92 Z28 was the insurance. Most people wouldn't carry the paper, and if they did, it was something like 800 a month (don't remember the exact number, but it was massive).
Keeping in mind i'm a 16 year old male, not a single traffic infraction or law infraction at all.

Under my parents name, since I don't have my license yet, just permit, i'm never in the car without my parents so its under they're name...and parents pay the insurance

i personally love the look of the stock IROC rims. the RS 15's are a little small, but i like having the extra sidewall (personally i think it makes the car look muscular). as soon as i get my car painted and stripped of gold decals, i wanna polish my stock rims and stick em back on there. i had looked high and low for good looking aftermarket rims (i do like the zo6 and the zr1 rims), and i would have to say the best wheel/tire combo is the stocker, but again this is all IMO. at the very least stick with GM designed rims!
BTW i like the bigger IROC aftermarket rims too, i would love to get 17's in that style. i also would love a supercharged LS1 and a t56, a killer sound system, and an 8 point with leather racing seats and 5 point harnesses

1fastz28 has a 91' Z28 that has the exact same paint. You could try to find him and ask.

I like the stock wheels to. Mine will probably get replaced with something bigger eventually though.

stock is nice and all but it won't get you noticed.........which is a personal preference and also is why every car is unique to their owner.
i loved my stock wheels but i couldn't have large brakes. so when i see small 15-16" wheels i think of a slow car and typically keep walking.
again it's all preference, a stock thirdgen with clean original wheels can look beautiful in it's own right.

I agree with Kandied for the most part on this. We all want our car to stand out from the crowd. However, one contridiction I have noticed is that once people discover something that they like (aftermarket product or otherwise) everyone pretty much migrates towards it. As a result, everybody's car starts looking all the same again. Constratingly, I myself try to envision my version of the perfect thirdgen and a lot of stock parts fit the bill nicely. I am not out to create the best most unique car on the planet--unless you got the money to do so. If I did, I probably would buy a Corvette or 300zx...

j/k!Honestly, I would love to put on some 18's, it's just not in the budget at this time.
I DO think that the factory IROC wheels are some of the best wheels to come from an OEM though. Probably why they are copied so much.

Kandied, I would agree that your car certainly deserves all the attention it gets, but 87David has a point, everyone migrates towards ONE idea. How many cars here all stock appearing, except for larger rims? LOTS, and it's not just here, just drive around any town.
I can't tell you how often my car gets attention, either at a show, or at the grocery store, and 9 out of 10 times, people comment on how impressive the car looks without huge rims and tires.

it's all preference just as i said.....personally there isn't another car i'd rather have beyond a few imports that reach 6 figures so i build my thirdgen exactly how i like it.

but once again it always does go back to personal preference and what you intend for the life of your car....daily driver, or show car..
take your pic..thats what defines us as thirdgen owners...we all have one common interest...

I like the stock wheels too...but...if you do a major appearance modification...like an SS hood, or Cowl hood...and you have the stock 15 or 16 inch wheels....the wheels just kind of look out of place...that's what I really noticed on my car anwyays...

i agree, and to go a little further, if you decide you are gonna show your car, stock gets boring after awhile seeing the same car over and over and over.
I don't know about shows in your area, but here, my stock appearance is in the minority. I think I mentioned earlier, but I can't tell you how many people comment on how much they like my stock rims. Old hotrodders and coolie kids alike. I've had several younger guys tell me that they would've NEVER left the stock rims on a thirdgen, but can't get over how good they look on mine.
I actually like big rims, it's a perfectly acceptable mod. I just hate seeing coffee stains on a seat somewhere, decent (but not great) paint, and $3000 dollars worth of wheels and tires. Keep in mind Kandied, Graboid, Iroc2nv, you guys are NOT the norm. I fully respect your cars and think they look great. Heck, you can't have airbags and still have stockers!!!! One day I'd like a Impala SS with bags on some 18's. I just chose not to do it to the roc.

There were 3 reasons I changed my wheels;
1) I want my car to be custom.
2) I really like the look of the wheels I baught
3) My stock wheels were faded badly, so if I was gonna put money into the wheels it was going to be for new ones.

....a friend and I were just talking about this, and I think I have a better way to describe my opinion.
I have no problem with the big wheels. It's that there are SO MANY places to put the money, all of which help performance, handling, appearance etc., yet it's not the "cool" thing to do, so many chose to put it into wheels. Kinda like the carraige before the horse if you ask me...
...but then again, we each do our own thing, and that's cool!

ok, I also don't think people buy rims for their car because it's a "trend." I know I personally am not spending 2 g's on a set of boyd coddingtons because it's the cool thing to do.. I work way to hard for my money. I'm spending the money because wheels can make or break a car. If you have a car with a really nice paint job and sh*tty wheels the car is going to look like sh*t. If you have a car with an ok paint job and NICE wheels the car is going to look pretty good. I also think that wheels completely change the look of a car which is why it makes or breaks them, and nice rims REALLY set off a nice paint job. JMHO.
Right along with Daytona here, the wheels are the best things to change to look individual. Everyone knows Jeff's and CrazyHawaiian's cars by their Boyd wheels, everyone knows FLYNLOW92rs' car because the wheels are freakin huge, and nobody knows my car cause the wheels look like this:

I think aftermarket rims make these cars stand out. i think that every 3rd gen should have come with nothing smaller than the 16x8 wheels offered in the IROC and base versions. I had the 15x7's and they made the car look dull and silly. I went for the snyper wheels because i didn't need "bling" at the time but I needed a rim that matched the lines of the car, was functional, and looked like they came on the car stock.
