Hood Insulation
Hood Insulation
The material under my hood (I guess its called the hood insulation) was cracking, rotted, etc. So I took it off. However I have been hearing that if you do not put anything back on, base / clear coat system paint will crack / bubble / get damaged. Because I heard that the insulation absorbs the heat. Is there any truth to this that anybody knows? Thanks

IIRC that padding is just a sound deadener. Ive never heard of any problems with paint bubble. Anyone else care to chime in?

A friend of mine has a T/A and an IROC. The T/A doesn't have the insulation and it gets really freaking hot, the IROC still has it and it doesn't.
Moral of the story, can't prove that it would mess the paint up, but it is possible from the heat.
Also, how hot does it get in PA?

Underhood temps can be extreme.
Some have taken the insulation out for a number of reasons, faster ETs, didnt know whats is for, looked ugly, etc.
If you care about you hood leave it in. It works like a styrofoam cup holding hot coffee. Your hand does not get hot because of the protecting barrier of insulation.
The insulation prevents heat transfer, the material will not absorb heat, otherwise it would transfer heat.

while it will probably keep your hood a bit cooler unless im crazy most cars dont have it in there, and ive had mine off for a bit just cause it was fugly and ive had no problems.
Usually the summertime highs in PA reach mid 80's, occassionaly we'll have our 90 and 100 degree days, but thats VERY rare. Yea, I think I'm going to find a new piece or something, perhapes from the dealer. Thanks a lot everybody.

if you have a acsd hood there is no place to out it back on, granted it is fiberglass and not steel but no paint problems here.
