Birthday present for an 18 yr. old...

Its not finished but all i can say is... wow. My camaro came from Van Nuys and when i got it the paint was in horrible condition. For my 18th b-day present (yesterday) my grandpa who is a semi truck driver came in to paint my car for me.

He's painted hundreds of cars, he used to do this stuff back in the day so he was the best guy for the job.

Plus nothing beats spending two days hanging out w/ someone you really only get to see on holidays...

Here's the pics:

we sanded all the old paint off, he filled the few imperfections in w/ a little bondo and hardener and then primed, sanded, primed, sanded. etc.

The first picture is my car officially primered. If any of u remember when i first got my car i sprayed it down w/ 10 cans of flat black rustoleum to try to stop it from rusting.

Here's a pic of it before we started:

here's the front end, still not painted. My Grandpa had to leave so he'll be back tuesday or so to finish it up.

We're jamming the doors and the hatch and the inner hood items so it'll look really sharp IMHO when we're done.

I'd like to hear some of your opinions and comments about my project. I'm just excited I'm finally going to have a painted car here soon!

I'll get to wash it and wax it and be uptight about getting it dirty.

Send your thoughts my way!

Brandon

ps. the pictures might be kinda distorted. I shot them in too high a resolution and then had to use paint to make them smaller.

thanks Phantoms,

we've covered up everything we could get a hold of except one...

when i took the taillights out we forgot to plug those holes they screw into... that reminds me, they're sitting in the yard.

Haha i bet i got a lil primer in my cargo area. Good thing that hatch motor cover is there huh? Guess I don't have to worry about that side getting dirty, nobody sees it.:lala:

keep it coming,
Brandon

Looking good so far dude, What color is it going to be? I would imagine red primer = red paint? Or is that something were going to have to wait to see?

Keep up the good work, i want to see that thing painted and ready to rock!

Looks good so far. Just make sure you keep the headlight pockets BLACK. They just don't look right when they're not black.

hey, thats a pretty good job there. i just did my car, still no mirrors, spoiler, door panels, or weatherstripping, but its definitely worth it. i don't have pics yet, but its burnt orange with silver flames. just make sure you take your time on it and don't rush it, cuz i did and i forgot to tape the sidemarkers, but i've already got the clear ones so its ok. but the main thing is to be paitient that way you don't have to go back and redo it. very good job, i look forward to seeing the finished product.

Jeff,

Unfortunately, the paint DIDN'T come from home depot, haha....

86IROCKET-Z,

I'm located in Pleasant Hill, Miami County. Its about 7 or so miles west of Troy, Ohio.

Stingraye,

Yes the headlight pockets will be painted black. Along w/ the mirrors.

We spent almost 2 full days working on my car so far. I know the guy i bought it off of would never, ever recognize it now.

Thanks for all the compliments!
Brandon

I think you should pop the door panels off and take off the mirrors, door handles and locks. It would only take you a couple hours to do it and the paintjob will come out much better.

The first time you take the car to the carwash and you spray the paint edge on the door lock with the high pressure hose and the paint starts peeling back-- you'll wish you did.

Besides, you can't spray behind the mirrors with the mirror on there. There's going to be a "dry" spot behind the mirror head. You're painting the mirrors black anyway. It'd be easier if they were off the car. Just my $.02

I'll run that by him when he comes back later this weekend, thanks for noticing it!

I have already removed/installed the door panels once before, i just don't know if they'll hold together to get back on, haha.
