converting taillights

Hey everyone, just wondering if I should do a tail light swap from my T/A lights to a pair off a formula, kinda like the 5.0 guys do with GT stangs. I prefer the look of the Formula ones, but would like a second oppinion. I was also wondering how difacult it would be to change them. Thanks, Ben

What are the years? I am pretty sure that it will be inter-changable.

my car has 88' tail lights, and the formulas are either 88' or 89's.

Huh? What does them being used have to do with it, and why will they look like there out? You did the opposite of what I want to do, you put T/A lights into a Formula, I want to do the reverse.

From what I have read, you have to do a little re-wiring down under the dash so that you can separate the turn signal from the brake light. May have to do some re-wiring at the rear harness as well.

I was looking into doing the re-wiring for my 91-92 GTA lights to go onto my 86 Trans Am, but I went ahead and put them on the Formula since the Formula is already wired for a separate turn signal.

yeah, you're best off getting the light harness out of a base firebird, or a formula, since the harnesses are different. your current harness has four bulbs on each side (two brake/turn signal bulbs, one reverse light, and one bulb that just lights up red). the taillights you want to put in have six bulbs on each side (two brake lights, one reverse light, two bulbs that just light up red, and one turn signal). the swap isnt very hard, you unscrew your plastic interior panel in back, unscrew the plastic wingnuts, then pop out the taillights and bulbs. after this, if you have the harness you need, you unplug your existing one (which should be on the drivers side near the plastic wingnuts you unscrew), remove it, then install your new one. after this, you simply reverse the process above... I did the swap you're talking about, only i went from the red taillights to 85-90 t/a tails. I was 16 at the time, and i could figure it out.. so its not too difficult..

Hey guys, Thanks alot for the help, I know my way around a motor pretty good, but wiring is a whoal different story, so thanks for the tech help. I think the new lights should look good on my T/A, LX tailights always look better on GT 5.0's.
