headlight blackouts?? where do you get them and how do they work?
Ive been searching for the black outs for the headlights, how do they mount and where can you get them can anybody help?:hail:
Autozone, CAP, Advance auto, Summit Racing, Jeg's, Ebay!
Headlight blackouts are "slipped" into slots. The slots
are included in the package. They are just taped on
with special 3M body tape. More like 3M double sided
tape! I never liked the headlight blackouts, and they never
stayed on well either. When you buy them in the package,
they include instructions. I lost both of them on the highway
because it's a cheesy setup. Best to modify them more
perminently to the front bumper/headlight area. But, that
requires drilling holes!
I have the rear blackouts on my car now. Very easy to
install and never had a problem with them. Mainly because
there is fair less wind force on them while driving, so they
stay put! Those are just velcroed on. But again, you can
modify them to be more perminent by drilling holes in the
taillights to bolt them down.

I would stay away from the black out covers, at least the black ones. They do smooth out the lines of the front end, but reduce headlight output significantly.
I had purchased a set of the GTS carbon fiber look blackouts (really just checkered paternes of dark and darker) in 1999, I don't know if they are still made though.
THe front ones did not fit right, as all of our noses are a little different from age/abuse, plus cops didn't like them.
After numerous traffic stops I ditched them.
The rears were cool, the light output was ok at nite, but during the day, not so much.
I would recomend the GTS rears in the carbon fiber look, and the clear front ones (w/ a custom mouting tab system, to keep them).

ARE illegal in most states. As it says right on the package.
Back in the 90s, the only manufacturer for the blackouts
was GTS. Over the years they made carbon fiber and
clear.
But now the people who make the rainguards, Auto Vent Shade,
also make blackout and carbon fiber kits! But, like
srdynamics1 stated above, they don't fit right! Even the
rear ones are not a perfect fit, but I think they still look
fine. Cops don't like the blackouts, that's for sure! I got
pulled over a few times for them a long time ago. They
also dim the headlights out a lot, so you should remove
them for night time driving. But in short, they are a waste
of money! I am lucky to have the rears fit ok and never
had a problem with them, but they are still illegal. Even
though the taillights shine right through no problem.

I did like the way the carbon fiber look tail lights lit up at nite. Checkered, similar to pontiacs but cooler.
I installed hundreds of the GTS blackouts in the mid 90s. Everybody had to have them at the shop I worked for.
(better than the neon craze) Those sucked to install and RR.
Funny thing is we sent over 30% of the headlight covers back because of poor fit.
IIRC GM did at one time offer them in the early 80s.
These factory pieces are supposedly a much better fit but good luck finding one, let alone a pair of decent ones.

As I prepare to get flamed....
I disagree. I like the look of the blackouts on both the front and the rear if they match up with the color scheme on the car.
I never had an issue with fitment on the front or the rear lights. As for the cops, I've been pulled over before for not having my front plate attached... they always look right at the blackouts and never say anything.
Again, I really think that it's dependent on the color(s) of your car.

btw,
I forgot to say that if you do get a good set of blackouts. it's understood that you should also spend the money to get a really good set of fogs too.
You def. need the compensation for the loss of light in the front.

DigitalMonarch0,
You won't get flamed by me! I think they look good on
your car. Think it's because you already have the Anniversary
or "Heritage" strips on your car, so it actually compliments
the whole theme of your car, as you stated.
I think the rear blackouts, for some reason, look good
on ANY Camaro. Firebirds too. But I don't like Firebirds.
But the front blackouts, I don't like anymore. I think
mainly because of the "frustration" factors: Cops, bad
lighting, poor fit, flying off your car on the highway, etc.!
They are only designed for looks anyway. You are
not suppose to drive around with them on all the time.
Hence why there is a warning on every package: For
Off Road use only! Check with your state for...blah blah
blah! Basically, they are for car shows. Which is where
I see them more than on the street everyday.

I've been pulled over several times, for a front plate, but never on my Blackouts. The only problems I have with mine, is one, its against the law for inspection stations to inspect it, so everytime I get an inspection sticker, I have to take them. It's no big deal, but I would have to replace the velcrow on the rear blackout every year which really sucks. Also, after running with them on since 99, I finally had to take them off because I got a night job, and I like to see at night. And for obvious reasons, upgrading my fog lights won't do me much good.

They look super sweet with black heritage stripes, like digital's car
Like I said above, they really smooth the lines of the front end.
Just not worth the hassle for me.

I think they look good but removed the gts lables or whatever lables that are on them just make them all black, If you have a contrasting color on the car that is black they will blend in, i wanted the all blacked out look
