Flat Black

I plan on painting my Camaro flat black starting at the end of this month. I want it to look like the Skunk2 drag RSX . I know alot of old hot rodders do that alot, which is one of the main reasons I wanna. Does anyone know how to get that look tho? I know I dont want just primer because I want to be able to wash it up, plus i want it to have that almost-semi-gloss look of the Skunk2 car.

There's no money or any reason behind wanting this paint beside the looks. I plan on getting some Volk GT-P's for it that have that deep, dark polished look, and putting either a white or chrome-looking graphic on the side, which I think is goona look sweet.
Thanx,
Chris

use a single stage paint with a desired % of flattner would be the way to go

From what I've read, John Deere Blitz black is the cheapest and best option.
I think it would appear mean and aggressive if done right.
My delaminating teal isn't very bad ***.
Go for it. then post pics.

Check this link out
http://www.hotrodders.com/t31993.html

"Blitz Black TY6416 $23.00 +or-$
Primer TY6457 $24
Reducer PT158 $14"

pretty cheap option, better than primer IMO

Awesome. I guess I was looking for more of a satin black than flat black, and that Blitz Black is gonna be perfect. Ya think that leaving the engine bay and door jams red would help give it an old school rat-rod look, or just look stupid?

I would spray the jams and engine bay also.

You could paint the jams and bay with the JD Blitz Black rattle cans, if you had too.
I have a feeling if the prep and paint is done half *** it will look worse than or just like an old primered beater. But then again that look is cool in its own way. The anti-paint job.

Here is a flat black (not JD BB) from cardomain

I would spray it all, what I think would look cool is do some flat black and some regular color in a two tone with the flat done on the top half like some of the old 'cudas had. but if you do go all flat black, tint your tail lights with the nightshade stuff, would make the car real stealth looking.

It wont be done halfass, I'm gonna have someone who knows what their doing spray it. I'll probably do the engine bay and jams too. I can't wait to see how agressive she's gonna look. I thought about tinting the taillights too, but I think I'm gonna leave 'em bright red.

I think it would look cool flat black and so something like put the heritage stripes on it in gloss black.

Wow that flat black camaro looks surprisingly good... and is that an 82-84 lower spoiler on a 85-92 front fascia? That doesn't look half bad...

Yup I like flat black too. I was gonna do it to my drift car because its easy to touch up bodywork and whatnot after crashing, but then my friend (hes a painter) talked me into going with a glossy color with clear. And he hooked me up, so its cheap, so I said alright. The new color is sick but so far only the hood and gas cap door are painted, gonna wait till I crash it a good one before doing the 91-92 GFX and painting the rest of the car to match. I know I'll regret it after the entire car is painted and I crash.

A flat cranberry red or flat green similar to Crazy's "gang green" drift car would appear a little more intentional.

I am about a week a way from painting my car flat black. I'm using PPG dp90 its a flat black non sanding primer.

Are you going to do any pinstriping?

I went to ACE hardware and bought 3 cans of satin black and that was enough for my car when I did it.

Nice TPI383 I was thinking of silver racing stripes on the flat black.
With silver Iroc decals. How would that look?

I like the PPG DP90. Its almost satin black, and seals in all the bodywork. Its a really great product that I use on every project car. The grey/green looks like factory when sprayed inside of a car.

Flat black does get my vote on certain cars.... You can always just shoot the car with a black base and not clear it...Then it is sealed, but still gives the "look" you are going for. I used Valspar 2000 series Direct To Metal primer on my 57' , I think it looks pretty good. Sort of a poor quality picture, but you can get the idea.

How, in the blue hell do you seal a rattle can!?? If there is a good answer to this, I will do my knight rider conversion like that. It will look awsome. Also, the rims are going black as well.

Flat Black

I wanted to paint my old '86 TA Flat Black, but the "experts" at the auto paint store said that if I painted the car flat black, that the paint would fade in the sun, and also eventually crack after about 1 year. One guy told me that a Base coat of flat black, followed by a clear coat would be the way to go. I asked about putting a real high quality black primer on it, but erveryone I asked said that the primer black would not keep it's color, and would crack in about 6 months.

Has any one had problems with flat black, satin black or primer black paint jobs holding up in the sun? I live in Las Vegas, so there is alot of sunshine here.

I got mine done almost all the way to flat black but its primer. I sanded down all the paint and and sprayed it. Looks good. Right now its in a garage so water isn't a problem until next week. I'm using Dupilicolor sandable primer. What should I put on top of this so it doesn't rust or fade on me. They have stuff that is also by Duplicolor that is called primer sealer. It's suppose to seal the surface so you can paint it and the paint won't absorbe into the primer. Should I use this? I was thinking this may seal it up and I won't have to worry about it. If not I was going to rattle can it flat black or try to spray it white again like it was. What do you think I should do? Thanks

john deere blitz black

Just how much sheen is accomplished with blitz black? I want it to be eggshell shine as much as possible. very similar to the finish with dupont primer, sealer.

How much is the dupont stuff per gallon. I have to buy a compressor and spray gun too, unless I can use a friends. I want to keep this as low buck as possible.

What do you guys think, flat black, polished 17's and a silver or red hood bird on my power bulge hood.
I am really thinking about the ws6 wheels, or the 10 spoke chevy's.

ok here is how its really done FA01

http://www.hokpaint.com/scripts/depo...kspecialty.bbx

Hok black base then clear with flattening agent added, it dulls the clear so you can get the satin or flat black look but still be able to wash and weather the sun the color won;t fade with this process. you are still clearing but the flatten agent will take away the shine of the clear.....and it will last just like paint should.

blitz black is satin, and it will last just like paint should. Plus it is tough as nails. I am told that after adding the hardener, rock chips are almost a thing of the past. Tractors that have this paint on them still look like new (look at hotrods.com for my info) after 30 years.

This paint doesn't fade, chalk, and I think provides the perfect finish. I just want to know exactly what it looks like. I think it might be just a hair too dull for me. I really like that dupont sealer finish.

Can I get a closeup of someone with blitz black in the sun, please.

With all do respect fellas, but all the flat black jobs I've seen look like rattle can jobs. I know this cuz my 79 firebird was rattle canned and it looked mean and rugged. However, I never knew how to seal it, so its stays on there.

How do you make rattle can paint stay on and water resistant.
In other words how would you seal it??
Please someone give me an answer.

You could probably do the dp90 for $150 and it seals the body work and will not absorb water. As for as basecoat with flattened clearcoat, If I were gonna go through that much trouble
I would not flatten the clear. I chose the dp90 because of the price and ease of use (single stage). My car gets beat up and sees a lot of miles.

Probably, but you really don't want to rattle can it.

If you half *** it now, you will regret it later. Most likely you will get trash talked, by riceburners and mustangs. BUT If you have some power, then make it look as bad as you want. I always liked the negative attention recieved by a dirty car though. It makes it all the sweeter when you win. My favorite line while taking some kids money "Well it looks really nice, at least you keep it clean".

Some of the best races were really nice, and super clean cars that I just barely pulled on them.

I give lots of respect for someone who could whip up on me, and still have great interrior, and body. I just can't do that. I am much more mechanical, and flat black seems to be the easiest way to give it a custom look, and still be durable.

Does anyone have a few pics of a finished flat black job on a bird. I need an example to photoshop some ideas on for finishing effects like wheels, and subtle gloss black stripes.
