rear louvres

i'm looking for a new rear window lourvres for my '88 formula. the type on my car is the three piece kind... plastic parts with three or four slits on both sides with the metal louvres running across the back glass. the body shop quoted me $707 for a new unit... i'm sure there's somewhere cheaper i could order from. any help?

thanks.

I'd have to agree. Get limo tint or something instead. But if you really like them go for it it's your car.

Hey, that price is way, WAY too much! $700???
I've never heard of such a thing... I got some a few years ago (not using them now, I hate em') and they were $220 brand new. I personally think the 3 peice kind is kinda ugly compared to the one piece look. but, if the 80's look is what You want, those will do. Just please don't pay $700 for ANY louvers.
I don't know any places on line to get any, because I've never really looked for em on-line... but it should'nt be too hard...

Not to sound like a used car dealer but my friend has some for sale on the classifieds. It is the Craiger one in gray but it can be painted. The louvers across the back are the aluminum ones. Email him at shara100@aol.com for more details.

I just purchased the factory original set from a dealer in NJ. I called a local dealer and was told that they were discontinued 8 years ago. They ran a locator and found 4 left in the country. The original price was I think $240. I got 'em for $175 just to get them out of inventory. They are the 1 piece look. Call your local Chevy or Pontiac parts and see if they can locate a set for you. Sometimes window tint doesn't look right on a large surface. This will add a good look to your car!!

Personally I think these look decent. If you don't like the 80's look, why would you drive a thirdgen to begin with?

I totally agree, I think they give our cars a completed look (just my opinion), besides, I imagine they keep out a lot of sun, an effect I'd love to have with my black interior. That thing gets hotter than hell in the summer when I have to park it outside at work. If they can find more than one let me know and I'll have my local dealer run a dearch for me and get a pair

You can get them (the 3 piece style) for a company called National Parts Depot for $199-219. You can reach them at www.NPDLINK.com or 1-800-874-7595. They are a really good company that deals mostly in 67-81 F-bodys. I used them a lot for my '68 and my buddy used them for his '77, no complaints yet. (other than no 3rd gen cataloug yet)

Tint on F-bodies looks good. Louvers went outta style. Like other people are saying if your going for that early 80's type look, go nuts. But all boils down to what YOU like!!!

You get louvers, you gotta get big wheels on the back and small wheels on the front. Plus get the back jacked up like this car in the pic (I am aware that he has it sitting on stands) then you'll look real greasy!!!

I kinda like the way they look on my car. When I bought it I wasn't sure if I should take them off or not, but they grew on me.

I always thought the wrap-around one-piece ones looked cheap and tacky, like something you'd find on the back of a Daytona.

Actually I think one of the reasons I don't generally like louvres is that they're usually body-colored. The black ones on my silver car do make it look a little "Mad Max" as someone suggested, or as my roommate says, "those things make it look like a DMC".

If the louvers seen by you have always been body colored, then they have been painted (like in the picture above). If you ordered a car from Chevy with the louvers, you get 'em flat black, regardless of the car color. That was their intent. The black gives the car a nice accent. The ones in the wraparound style are the factory style. If you get 'em, make sure you dry the underside after you wash em and also dry the window. The water spots get hidden by the shadows until you take them off and your window can't be seen out of. Etches the glass.
