I've thought about this too. Normally I'm not a fan of anything clear that's not a window, but this would be so subtle it might be kinda cool. You'd need red bulbs though.
Just take out the lens, make a pattern and bring it to a vinyl sign shop. They'll have clear plexi. I work for a sign shop and if I ever get minute, I plan on trying this idea out!

Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
Easy enough to cut one out of plexiglas. I did the one on my 94 Cavalier - which takes the exact same lens as my 89 Formula.
Cut the piece to fit, drilled the mounting holes, and drilled out for and installed 16 red 5mm 12k mcd LED's. Painted the back side of the 'new' lens black so it isn't hardly noticeable until the LED's light up

Do high mount brake lights use LEDs or regular bulbs?
If regular bulbs then it might look like butt. With LEDs it would look sweet for sure.

That's what I thought... but I dont have a high mount brake light on a wing or spoiler, so I wasnt 100% sure
Anyways, I think LEDs would make it look great.
