Anyone know how to strip paint off of Plastic?- Help?
Hey Guys,
I need your help. I recently took out my center console for some prep work to it.
After 10 years, it was starting to get faded
and accumalte dust and crap in the center
valley. My plan was to repaint it again
and do some other custom stuff.
I applied primer to it first, and the next day applied the black paint..after I applied
the paint, I noticed that the paint started
to wrinkle... The paint has now dried, and
I need a way to remove it. I'm not sure if
regular paint thinner will eat away at the
plastic. The plastic may also retain some
of the chemical stripper with it and when
I try to repaint, those chemicals will
disrupt the paint.
Please....any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Tommy

The reason the paint wrinkled is that you were using spray paint. Sometimes you have to wait a very long time for the thinner to evaporate from the primer. It's hapened to me many times. What you've done is seal the thinner within the paint, and as it trys to escape, the thinner attacks the paint. Spray paint has alot of thinner in it. It evaporates quickly and that's what makes it dry.
Try to sand the part with some 400 grit paper wet, then let dry for a couple of days. Then repaint it. That should work. But, light coats.

try the fiberglass paint stripper, it is less abrasive than all other strippers, thus the use on fiberglass. it shouldn't damage the plastic if done right. scrape off what you can, rinse with water to stop the process, and sand what is left. you will probably have to repaint though either way.

Mr Iroc, back in my model building days I used EASY OFF oven cleaner with great success.
It never hurt any of my plastic; but your still better of testing in a unseen area.
Also the longer it sits the harder it is to
get off
Good luck

Hey Mr.Iroc, I got a painting question for you. Did you paint the unpolished part of your wheels? If so, what color is that? I currently have the stock 16 inch rims on my camaro and would like to polish them and get rid of the white painted part. I want to repaint the inside with some subtle color like what you have.

Hey Jim,
Yes, the rims are painted. The paint is called "Gun Metal Grey". I think it gives the rims a bit more surface structure and
definition.
Thanks
Tommy
