what paint to use on rims
what paint to use on rims
Not sure if this is where I should post this questions, but ...
My '91Z has the colour coded rim option 81P - bright red. I've seen many Z with the colour fade over the years due to heat, sun/UV etc... What's a good paint to use, while doing a rim resto. Would an application of a high temp paint be a good choice with a shot of clear coat over the top work? Need suggestions as I don't want the paint to fade, after going through the trouble to mask and refinish....
TIA

Wheel Painting
I painted my wheels red about a year and a half ago. I just used duplicolor automotive paint. I picked it up at wal-mart for just a couple bucks. This finish came out really really nice. I also clearcoated it with duplicolor paint. After the year and a half, the color still looks really clean. You would have to clean them regularly those because it seems that the brake dust seems to like the clearcoat. But it looks awesome whn they are clean.
Hey Red1992...
The rims look great, the Duplicolour that you used, was it a high temp or just the regular stuff? Out of curiosity, about how many cans of paint did it take, and did you cut out a jig to cover the rims or did you end up masking all 4?
TIA
Andrew
p.s. did the factory clear coat the colour? or was it left alone?

The duplicolor was regular paint, no high heat. I think it took me 2-3 cans to paint 2 coat on all four wheels. I think i also used 2 cans of clear. I did mask them off. It took about 6 hours to mask all the wheels off. I believe the factory did clearcoat the rims. I posted a link a while ago so ill try to dig it up and post it here.

Thanks Ryan for the link...Your rims look great. In your opinion, does the Duplicolour match the GM factory Bright Red? I can only assume that there is no noticable difference.
I'm at a disadvantage because I will be leaving the tires on the rims. This will definitely slow me down.
TIA

I am assuming it is or is close to the exact color of the factory paint because i used the sane GM paint code. But in my opinion, it does look like the original color. When you paint them, make sure you smooth the tape down because on one wheel the tape was not smooth and the paint seemed through the cracks. That is the only minor problem that i ran ino.

I used the regular Duplicolor as well to repaint my wheels (my car is also bright red) and the result was amazing. Just take your time masking-tape it. I think the color comes up really close to the factory color. There are 2 Duplicolor bright red: 388 and 398. Mine is 398.

I didnt primer the wheels before I painted them. I didn't think it really needed it to give is a smooth finish and it doesnt alter the color at all.
