Do I primer these wheels?

Hey im 15 and im restoring my thirdgen. I have some 15x7 firebird wheels off my 89 formula 350. They are discolored, but are pretty smooth. What I need to know is if you have to put primer over aluminum wheels? or do i just paint over what I have? thanks alot these are going to look sweet

Primer is really only used for any metal that will rust. So, you won't have to use primer on your wheels, Aluminum doesn't

Not necessarily true. Primer provides better adhesion for a paint therefore it makes sense to use.

Check it:

I hope this is helpful.

If it were me, I would just scuff the aluminum up with a scuff pad. That is where you really get your product to stick...not with primer. The main purpose for primer is to protect against rust...BUT it will also help with adhesion. But scuffing up the aluminum should be fine.

Ever seen a broken wheel after it was powder-coated. Most of the time, the baking process will weaken the alum.
