Paint on Chrome Wheels?
Anyone know or have any experience painting on top of chrome wheels?
Is there anything special about it - Paint/Clear Coat???
I have a set or chrome wheels which I would like to paint the inserts black but I didn't know if it would...
...Need a clear coat
...Harm the chrome
...Require special paint
...Make them impossible to polish
If anyone has any experience or LEGITIMATE suggestions, help me out.

Duplicolor Metalcast is for an an anodized appearance. They do offer a smoke color now but I am looking for more of a semi-gloss balck. The smoke wouldn't be bad, though.
Problem is, everywhere I have read says that this paint is designed for bare metal - which chrome is not entirely metal. The instructions say to use of bare metal of faux chrome-like materials, but doesn't mention actual chrome unless that is to be inluded in the bare metals.
What I am worried about is more if the paint will last, because the beauty of chrome is that you don't HAVE to polish it, and it doesn't wear off (although it chips). I don't want to have a set of rims 1 year or two old that look great minus the paint falling off.

Well on my dads Cadillac he used the smoked black stuff on his chrome STS wheels and they look perfect to this day(even the sand and salt from winter hasent affected anything). The best part is it looks great because it added depth to the rims, now I know you want to go right black but the depth look is amazing!!!

It does look nice, actually considering using it on my winter wheels. But on the chrome wheels I just want to paint the inserts (like stock IROC wheels) the line down each branch and the holes where the lugs go. I don't think the depth is necessary. I ever considered taping them off and then taking them to a paint shop, if that's what it takes to get a good, even, permanent coat.

sand it down to bare metal, then paint over the inserts. tape off the rest like you said, and then sand and paint the exposed part just like you would an entire wheel.

Something about sanding on a brand new set of chrome rims just doesn't sound like a good idea (thanks for the suggestion, though). The reason I opted for chrome this time around it that they are more durable and don't require constant buffing and polishing. The only downfall for chrome is chipping, by sanding the details, this would only invite chipping to happen sooner.
What I am looking for is simply a black paint that will stick to chrome well enough to not require any other coating, will last without wearing, and won't be effected by wheel cleaners/polishes.

Use Duplicolor high temp engine enamel with ceramic. You can get it at AutoZone or just about anywhere else. I used it on a set of chrome valve covers and it did not want to *** off. I also use it on my GTA rims and never had a problem with chiping peeling or fading however they are aluminum. I think Duplicolor also makes a paint just for rims but I am not positive on that.

there actually is a correct way to paint chrome...such as bumpers, rims, trim...and so on. You have to sand the chrome, then use an "etch" primer on the chrome. The etch primers etches itself into the metal...causing paint not to flake off. Works great

The reason the inserts on that car don't look right is because they didn't paint the middle where the lugs go.

I'm with Kammi on this. I think a vinyl decal would work just fine for the spoke/line. Too much surface area and you can notice that it's not really paint, but just for the spoke? ...it should look just fine.
For the record though, polish looks better than chrome if ya take care of it. You can have them professionally painted and cleared and you wouldn't have the maintenance.
