im planning on changing the lights in the gauge cluster in my 82 ta and i have ran into a problem. the gauges are unbelievably easy to get to and remove and so are the lights, but the problem is with the color of the lights. the light bulbs that came with the car are clear, but at night when i drive with the lights on, the gauges glow green. i checked the thing out, and there is nothing green back there to make the light appear green, no green film, screen or paper of any sort. upon further inspection i realized what was causing the greenish color... it was the two big plastic pieces that hold all the gauges. the part in the car is sort of aqua/sky/nastybluegreen sort of color, and the outside is spraypainted black, thats where the color is comming from. now heres the problem... im going to purchase those Xenon white bulbs (the ones with the little blue in them) and throw those in, but i think with this color inside its still going to be the same ugly color, or maybe even something worse. my question is, would i mess anything up if i spray painted the inside some color like white or something else so that i would not get that green glow anymore?? if spray painting it is a good/bad idea or if anyone has a better idea, could someone please help me???? thanks in advance.

I am having a similar problem. Mine is that my lights never worked. An electrical problem. What I need to know is how many pieces to the cluster are there? I have the green/blue back, the same but sprayed black, and with four holes for the guages, and then the clear piece that goes over it all. Is that it? How does the light get from the back, and go around the guages to the front?

The light is reflected from the blue-painted back of the of black metal piece that surrounds the front of the cluster, which is main reason the lights are generally so dim. I replaced the stock bulbs--11 in the cluster, 1 in the AC/Heater Control head, and 2 in the console clock--yesterday with the clear xenon/krypton bulbs from McEwen. The result is first rate. By the way, I chose not to go for the white overlays.

but if i were to replace the bulbs, and keep that nasty blue color, wouldnt the result still be about the same color?? since the bulbs now are clear anyways, i just want white light. when you changed your bulbs, did you get "all white light"??? is your thing nasty bluegreen color also??

Usually, the xenons are so bright that they overpower the blue ring and shine white anyway, but if you were worried and painted it white anyway, you'd get some REALLY white gauges.
