Here is a picture of my custom cold air intake I just made and some other pics of my car. Tell me if u think the cold air intake looks cheesy or looks good.
I guess it's OK, but why don't you put the filter right on the intake instead of running it around "Firebird TPI" style? The air has to go through a maze before it gets anywhere.
The air has to take about 5 turns before it gets to my engine on my Trans Am. That's one thing I always liked more about Camaro's ... it's a straight shot to the engine on the TPI's. That's why the 305 TPI Camaros have a few more horses than the 305 TPI Firebirds.
[edit] I just looked at your pics again and it doesn't look like you have room for what I suggested. Never mind. Good work.

Putting the filter right on the throttle body wouldn't be a cold air intake because it would just be sucking up hot air.
Cold air is more dense and makes more horsepower... the two turns his intake has in it aren't a big deal because the air the comes in by the headlights is much cooler than the underhood air.
Yeah....Pulling in underhood air certainly doesn't qualify as cold air. With an air dam, it might get closer, but that still barely qualifies in my book.

exactly. it looks cool, but it doesnt perform as well.
Well i couldn't put the air filter right off the throttle body anyways because i am running a 1000cfm oval filter that is made for the big blocks but since my cfm is pretty close to that, that is why i am running that. This intake was fairly cheap plus i didnt want to run the battery to the back of the car. thanks for all the advice though!
Honestly, I think its heading more towards the cheesy side. I would either route the filter down into the fender (note: get rid of the ribbed piece directly connected to the filter) or get one of the stock thirdgen intakes.

Would you be able to tell me what filter you have on there? I just had the same idea and came to see if anyone had done it, having trouble figuring out what kind of filter I'd be putting there.
I hate to say it, but you're not getting any cold air. Unless you get intake end of that tube completely out side the engine compartment, you're not going to get any benefit.

I planned on running it to where the battery sits and taking out that front headlight to allow for air to access the filter better, what kind of filter should I use? Thats the trouble I'm having here, first time doing something like this so any help is great
I have a 2nd gen, but similar deal... what I did was move the battery to the trunk. That allowed me to remove the battery tray and cut a 4" hole in inner fender. I mounted two of these back to back across the hole.
I then routed the air tube to the top one and connected the conical air filter to the bottom one. The filter is now in front of the front tire. I also built some heat shielding around it to further isolate from the engine compartment.
Once you go this route, to get the full benefit, you'd have to relocate your air temperature sensor and re-tune the ECM to take advantage of it. Given the stock IAT is in the upper intake manifold, the ECM currently mixes in coolant temperature into the calculation, which kinda defeats the purpose of a cold air setup unless you relocate the IAT and then tell the ECM it's relocated (along with adjust the air temp vs fueling tables).
I spent about a year experimenting with this before I finally got it all dialed in...

The Botophucket images are a hint it's a really old thread.
Clamp on filters are available from so many sources it's hard to plug just one. K&N is one falling off the log solution. The corner Vato Zone usually has a whole row of chrome accessories, just look for the fake carbon fiber and you'll know you're in the right spot.
If you ask me that kinda looks cool. Clean and like a factory appearance even 👍🏻
Thanks CK, that's actually been a goal to make most any mods I've done to my pos look factory-ish (at least to those who aren't Drew level).
Being an 87, it is a MAF car and the MAf is in between the clamps of the not quite factory A/C compressor that doesn't look fully out of place..
