I currently have the Unlimited product cowl hood with no latch for the hood. So I use hood pins. My question is to keep the hood open, what is everyone doing? I use a hood prop now but it gets in the way and would like to use the hood struts but know they are too powerful and will crack the fiberglass. I was thinking of trying to rig up some dead hood struts and some sort of "clamping" thing......does anyone have any tips?

 

I traded my good struts for a buddies worn out ones that wouldn't keep his steel hood open. His old struts work perfect on my fiberglass hood.

 

i installed a hood prop from an s-10 that i bought in a junkyard and that worked out pretty well. i'll try to take a picture of the install and post it tonight if you are interested.

 

I'm using the fiberglass hood struts from an 84 camaro. Bought them new from GMPartsDirect.com

 

Those are some great ideas...so some worn hood struts or some fiberglass ones would work?

I sorta have a custom prop rod now but I don't like it cause I always hit my head...I know..clumsy...

Yeah, getting hood struts for the fiberglass hoods are your best bet. Thats what I did. Way better than looking for worn struts. Plus at least they are new and you know they are gonig to last for a while. The prop rod is ok but when it comes time to work on your car, your really going to get irritated with that SOB. At least I did.

I use worn out struts that still have plenty of power for my Harwood hood. Another option is to get totally spent struts that can't even hold that up, and buy a hood strut clamp from Snap On, Mac, or somebody else. It's a little tiny clamp made specifically for holding hood/hatch struts open.

 

i thought you were being funny saying to put a snap-on or mac vice grips on there and then i re-read your post and realized you were talking about something completely different. i'm dumb.
