I'm in the process of doin my crosslace wheels like that. I'm just not sure whether I should clearcoat the lip, or use carnuba. If you're doin the crosslace rims, good luck. It's a pain to sand it by hand, but there is a tech article on what grit sandpaper to use, and different steps. It was helpful for me, it might help you too.

yeah 16" formula rims off of my '89 i did one and it looks so nice. i'll post pics soon, i would have just polished them but they're kind of pitted and it's much easier and cheaper to just clean them up as best as possible and paint them, and i did clear the lip, i did the whole wheel, just to make the paint more resistant to chips and scratches

it would be almost impossible that your wheels looked worse than the ones I found in the junk yard
I should have taken pictures but I do things like this for my own confidence levels not to show off to my friends the end result does not need a story.
those wheels look like chrome and it took about 5 hours of sanding and polishing on each wheel.
Doing something quick and easy is ok and when I was younger I tried to convince myself that it was OK.
I have done who knows how many of these cars and my latest car I would not sell for 20k

i don't mean to be a ****, but i like the way they look and i'm going to do them all like this, and it really isn't quick and easy, i've spent around 6 hours stripping, sanding masking and painting on one wheel. they look good to me.

Uggghh!!!
Oh well! One thing's for sure; they are your wheels. So, if it makes you happy and you are proud of the work you have done afterward then good for you!
Having your car look the way you want is what it's all about!
Good luck with that, man.

I didn't really take my time on these, but it was still a lot of work to get them to this point. I don't really care much about these rims because I'm planning to get some aftermarket ones once my motor is built.
I've only seen one car in person that had black painted stock rims (it was the base Firebird rims). It didn't look great, but it didn't look horrible. I'd buy a set of cheap junkyard rims and paint them to see if you like them first.
well i'm likin the polished better, i need to polish mine, even though yours are pretty dirty still on the openings , but the base of it is pretty nice and shiny. lookin good, of course a lot better with center caps ;-)
