All the info you'll need is in the following link, or in the links provided in the first post of the following link:

Probably not the answer you want, but your better off saving $100 - $200 and have a place like maaco do a quick spray. Probably look better and last longer.

We've been through this before, but it appears possible to get a pretty darn nice finish using this method, and there are photos to prove it. Here's a close-up of one gentleman's work:

ive done a lot of shaker can on various things and i feel that i am very good at it. i did a quicky primer job on my car back in the day just to keep it from rusting before i got it painted, and i thought it can out well, i found the hood to be the hardest part, unless you takeit off first, but if you dont care too much how the jobs comes out and you are pretty much looking to get the car all in 1 color, give it a wirl, hell it will probably cost like 75$ and a decient crappy paint job for 75$ isnt too bad

the bottom line is in your prepping! as long as the surface is clean and dry itll stick ok. as far as apearance, its a matter of your sanding savyness, take a look at my vgarage profile and take a peek at my air box, that is a rattle can job, you just need to take your time, sand out your runs pre clear coat, then sand out the clear with 600 grit then move to 1500 or 2000 grit and then to polishes to finish her up, while i wouldnt recommend a metallic whole car paint job in a rattle can, due to the modiling that would occur (un even metalic appearance) how ever i think you could swing it using straight colors hell im interrested in you idea, but like i said its all in the prep and sanding!
