Re: Restoring IROC Hood Blisters

Im sure sanding and painting would work but what would be the best color to choose for originality, flat black, semi gloss black, or gloss black?

Re: Restoring IROC Hood Blisters

Take them off the car before painting. It will come out much better. Have a local auto shop spray em, and put them back on. Simple. Cost me 100$. Paid for the paint and sanding. Professional job and they look showroom.

Re: Restoring IROC Hood Blisters

Take them off, sand em a bit, and paint them with rustoleum satin black paint. I think it'd look fine and would really spare you some change.

Re: Restoring IROC Hood Blisters

I have done the black trim on numerous vehicles. The only trim paint that will keep its color and be the original tone and texture is SEM Trim Black. Have to get back with the part #. Everything else will either be wrong texture and 'grab' dirt and wax, will be too glossy or will fade....or combination. The texture is not smooth but not gritty, the black is not glossy but not dull. Goes on well and resiliant to sunfade. I did the t-top black, atch black and wiper cowl almost yearly on my '86 until I was introduced to the SEM product by a automotive painter. Since 1999, when I did the SEM trim painting, I have not had to do it again and its still looks as good as the day I did it. I recommend a thougrough clean and prep of any dirt, oils, armorall and overspray. Lightly sand and imperfections if needed and prep clean again. Use an adhesion promoter since this is a plastic part. Spray SEM trim black in even back and forth motions across the entire part parallel to each louver. Spray not too colse and not too heavy. Wait 4-5 minutes in temps around 65-90* and do another coat. 4-5 coats will be perfect. Wait 15-20minutes before handling. 24hrs and then reinstall on hood. Never use armorall or any other stuff like that. No need to wax them either. Just wash with car. If you are using a shaker can, I recommend this spray can handle that sells at auto-parts stores in their paint section. Its less than $5 and snaps into the cans neck. Reusable too. It provides a nice trigger control to help aid in applying paint. Youll love it and it will make the sweeping motion go easier and will have better painting results. Hope this helps and good luck

Re: Restoring IROC Hood Blisters

These can still be bought brand new from GM. There about $ 200 though. They'll be just as they were when the car was new. It's worth it..

Re: Restoring IROC Hood Blisters

SEM has a 4 step process to restoring/repainting plastic. I bought my supplies from Year One and added the part numbers at the end of each line. I am sure you can do it with less steps but I don't know what kind of results you will get. Worked great on changing my grey interior plastic pieces over to black.

1. SEM Soap vinyl/plastic cleaner to clean the oil/grease/armour all off (F3936)
2. SEM Plastic Prep Cleaner (A3835)
3. SEM Sand free bonding agent, for use on ABS plastic (do this and immediately follow-up with a light coat of SEM paint, then wait 15 minutes and repeat coats as needed) (P102)
4. SEM color coat paint black (SEM10)

Re: Restoring IROC Hood Blisters

i wetsanded mine with 1000grit and then used some dupli-color black paint. they dont look half bad actually. MUCH better than when they were all faded and nasty. took me about 2hrs with some beer breaks thrown in there

(sanding becomes a lot less monotonous and boring after a few beers )

Re: Restoring IROC Hood Blisters

I am in the middle of painting my car, So I am painting them black with real DuPont paint. I will try to post results when done. Just make sure to get all traces of wax/grease off with soap and the wax/grease remover. Sand/scuff and then paint. No need to sand or polish the clear on these pieces. I think a nicly prepared louver with spray paint would be noticable, maybe on a white though....
