Conflicting Paint Stories

Ok here is the thing, I'm in the market to get my 89 Iroc Repainted this summer and I went around to the best paint shops in town today to get a quote on a decent paint job. Nothing too fancy but not a Macco job either. Anyway I was thinking of doing a color swap to Silver and one guy told me that Silver Oxidizes the worst of any color and the other guy said oppsite. So I'm asking all those who have thought about this swap what have you been told or what is your experience with silver cars. Also I'm the guy who told me silver was bad said Red wasn't and the guy who said silver wasn't bad said red was so who has their **** right? The first guy uses PPG products and the second uses Dupont. Is there that big of a difference in quality of each companies Red's and Silver's? Could that by the reason for the differing opinions? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

In my opinion silver is fine and red does tend to oxidize quickly.

Both paints are good but I like PPG better.

silver is typically the worst color to oxidize mainly because of the higher metallic content.......

red isn't bad at all unless it's kandy then it's hell and shouldn't be left out in the sun anyway!

White is the only color that is the longest lasting of all colors mainly because of reflective properties....

either color over time will fade like any other, if your going to drive the car expect it to not look perfect forever!

Painting a car right is not an easy task nor is it easy to find the right guy for the job. the easiest and best advice i can give you is to check out their work first hand and go over specifically what you want and expect so there aren't any guessing and no surprises!!

If your not going the macco route and aren't doing it yourself chances are you will pay a bit specially with a color swap; you figure your going to have to hit every spot there's color otherwise it will look like hell.

Silver would look sweet it is a rare color, specially if you do a nice metallic silver as apposed to a gun metal silver.....something with a pearl or mild flake looks really sweet and isn't any more expensive than a stock silver!

red is an tends to be a prefered color though, it shows off body lines on 3rdgens more than anyother color.....either way whatever you choose should work well, just do it right and don't skimp out on the little details; that's what really makes the difference between a nice paint job and a dredful "macco" job

last thing.........as far as paint type, both are very similar (ppg and dupont) just process are different; so it depends more on the actual shade your trying to accomplish and what the painter prefers or in otherwords gets a deal on!

here's a little test, if your guy prefers ppg ask him why and then ask if he would do it in dupont........if he says no or the price changes drastically then chances are he's overcharging! most good painters can work with either paint so brand shouldn't be an option and price shouldn't change much you're mainly paying for labor not paint supplies.

If the guy is good, he'll do any color any type and any brand for all around similar prices.........it isn't the paint that is expensive, it's the hours and prep time that's involved.

chromillusion type colors will be a little more expensive just because they are (they're not any harder to paint!)

And kandy colors will be the most expensive because of the labor intensity and layer process!

either way $3500-$5000 should be a good range for a great paint job that isn't real custom wether you change the color or not. anything more is skeptical and anything less is macco unless your family member is doing u a favor!

just remember you get what you pay for!

I got a color swap done in December for $3300, but I did most of the grunt work before takin it in. The more you can do to help the shop get it ready the better, I'd let them do the final prep unless you know what you're doin...then again if you do you could probably paint it yourself too

That's why I like white .

And I have a nice Maaco job. Although it may help that I know the owners. But all the cars the local Maaco paints turn out good.
