Difference in GTS Blackouts for Firebirds?

Yes, I did a search.... I've been searching for GTS Tailight Covers, but everything that I find for Thirdgen Firebirds say 1986-1992 Firebirds but not Trans Ams? Does anyone know the difference between the shape of the taillights between a Firebird and a Trans Am of those years? I think I remember reading somewhere that the only reason the GTS Taillight covers say its not for Trans Ams is because of the center piece? Does anyone have more info? I would just like to know if the regular taillight shape is the same...

i think there the same, reaseon they say firebird only, and not t/a is because t/a tail's are already somewhat tinted, so it would be too dark. ive seen them on t/a's before.. long time ago. ive always wanted to buy a set too.. anbody got pics?

The 85-90 t/a taillights have a relector strip on the bottom. They are shaped differently. I heard GTS doesn't make blackouts for 85-90 t/a taillights. Base model firebird taillights do not have a relector strip on the bottom. The pic attached shows 4 of the 6 firebird taillights(not shown: 82-84 base model, 82-84 export taillights).

ok. the set I am looking for say its for 1986-1992 Firebirds but not Trans Ams. Is there big enough of a difference between the two models that one blackouts unit would not fit?

Re: Difference in GTS Blackouts for Firebirds?

i think they will fit,, yes, t/a lights have a reflective strip on the bottom.. but u can switch tail llights. ive seen people put t/a/ lights on base birds.. my point is this, there the same size. they fit in the same hole.. and like i said ive seen them on t/a tails before// do it they will look sweet on youre car.

Re: Difference in GTS Blackouts for Firebirds?

If you put the GTS taillights on firebird taillights - they fit like a glove. If you put them on trans am taillights they do not fit very well, if at all, they certainly didn't look right or good on the t/a's. I used to have a set of blackouts and I have both a firebird and a t/a so I tried them on both.

Unless you modify(cut, grind down) parts of the t/a taillight and/or blackout it will not look right. The blackouts might not fit unless you modify them.

Your taillights are the same shape as mine, only difference is the red strip at the bottom.

Re: Difference in GTS Blackouts for Firebirds?

what kind of mods are necessary, if you don't mind me asking? Is it extremely difficult or just something a dremel can take care off. I'd imagine it wouldn't be too difficult for me. I've swapped out my whole interior to black and even installed a 4th gen center console....actually, I think what I might do is buy them anyway, and if it "seems to difficult" I'll go to the junkyard and get regular base tailights *sigh*

You could also use the spray on tint, clear coat, wet sand, and then buff the hell out of it.

Yeah. Just get VHT Night Shade spray on tint. eBay is the only place I've seen it in a while. No Autozone/Pep Boys/O'Reillys etc. seem to stock it around here anymore.

I did VHT on my Tahoe's & my GTA covers on my wife's 90 Camaro's tail lights one day. On the SAME DAY, the SAME COP pulled me and my wife over, but several hours apart!

Granted, I did put it on kinda thick...

But yeah, just run GTA tail lights. No need to darken those.
