Powder Coating..

first off idk if this is the right fourm, if not i'm sorry..

Ok.. i've looked alot into rims.. since i'm not paying i have to get somthing that the person that's buying them likes and i like too.. so i was just thinking of powder coating the stock rims.. does anyone know how much that would run?.. and how well does it stand the elements.. i live in pretty much desert.. pretty much we get a little of everything in the seasons.. i've seen a guy up the road that had his 88 t bird wheels powder coated white.. and they ended up turning yellow.. i want black.. did that guy just not take proper care of the wheels?.. or is that a common problem with it?.. also if you've done this with your car please feel free to post pics

Re: Powder Coating..

I checked into having that done to the wheels on my 92 because the chrome isn starting to peel in places (I've had the wheels close to 6 years). The shop I went to quoted me $180 - $200 per wheel. Actually more than I paid for the wheels. I still may take him up on it and change the color of the wheels - I like his liquid smoke powder.

Re: Powder Coating..

By eyeballing (with straight edge and tape measure) the offset of the stock RS wheels, it was very close to the 15mm (about 1/2" on the RS wheels) of the new Z06 lookalike wheels I have. The new wheels are 1.5" wider, so they will stick out about .75" farther than stock, hardly noticeable to me.

Re: Powder Coating..

alright, hearing they stick out more makes me like them a bit more lol, i think the stock wheels are about as in there as i'd like.. i'm a fan of the wheels and tires kinda sticking out a bit.. i guess i'll call discount tires again, and tell them i wanna buy them.. i just hope i don't get the same guy that said those wheels wouldn't fit..

Re: Powder Coating..

Depends on who you go to.

The powder coating guy around my old town in the middle of almost nowhere would charge maybe 50-75 per rim. He powder coated my brothers' drag banshee atv frame in lime green for under $300.

The company I work for now has a sister company that will powder coat anything up to 3'x4' for free to me, as long as i'm employed at my company. There are other shops around here do industrial powder coating and i'm sure if I was off the street and offered the right guy at the shop some money he would powercoat for a reasonable price.

Re: Powder Coating..

I fully agree. I haven't had the opportunity to look for another shop in the area, then I might do the "this place will do it for this much" approach.

Not being familiar with the area, it gave me 2, one in College Place and one in Pasco.

For a bone stock LO3 with headers and exhaust, it did OK.

Re: Powder Coating..

In the neighborhood of 120 - 130 at the rear wheels and 175 ft/lbs. That's where my 92 V6 runs.

Re: Powder Coating..

The blast shop in kenosha will powdercoat rims for $25-35 a wheel. I am currently having them powdercoat my front sway bar, rear sway bar, trans crossmember, and wonderbar and they are charging me $25 to do them. Shop around and you can find good pricing

Re: Powder Coating..

For the money you're looking at to do one set of rims, you could invest just a little more, and buy your own equipment.
This kit has been discontinued, but it was $100. Search around some more and I'm sure you can find a current one. Buy whatever powders you want, and coat to your hearts content.
