Painting.
I was wondering what methods you guys round here use for your paint jobs? I was thinking about using a 300-400grit sand paper to sand it clean(through all the paint) then spray it with urethane then clear coat. But I am really looking for others that did their own paint jobs.
Thanks guys,
Cristian

Re: Painting.
if you mean sand it clean by going all the way down to the bare metal then you need to put etching primer down on the bare metal. and also if you are planning on going all the way down to bare metal it would be a little easier to use paint stripper. then after etching primer high build then sand it with nothing coarser than about 600 or you will see sand scratches. also i would use some guide coat to make sure that you dont miss any little dings. what i did was strip my whole car to bare metal, etch primed it, bondo/metal glazed all dents and dings, high build primered it, sanded it with 220, high build again any places that sanded through and sanded it with 320, then sanded it with wet 600 grit with guide coat.

Re: Painting.
why would you want to go all the way down to metal ?
If the car has no major flaws in it the a good scuff with
600 and then Base Coat-Clear Coat is used. No urethane then clear........go to www.autobodystore.com and in those forums you will find all the information you
want and need........

y would i want to go all the way to the bare metal?.............because i wanted to, seems to be a good enough reason to me. if i spend all the money on supplies and all the time it takes to do it i want to be sure its gonna come out lookin pretty darn good. you never know whats beneath your paint unless you remove it. like the hack job i found under my paint. just a thought. i do paint and body work for a living myself at one of the biggest private owned shop in nc so i think i kinda have a clue what im doing.

Re: Painting.
depending on the age of the car....depends whether or not to go down to steel. If you have a 20 year old car...and want to repaint it...chances are, if you don't strip it...then your new material could blister...or lift...or a number of things. Especially...with the new products out today...applying those over the old school products...could cause major headaches.

Re: Painting.
when I repainted my Trans Am I went to bare metal, then sprayed a urethane primer. I took it to bare metal to prevent any problems such as what sickness mentioned, if your paint is lifting off or anything you should remove the paint because it will lift any new paint you put on top of it. and somebody mentioned etching primer for bare metal, this is a great idea because it bites into the metal and makes it waterproof also sealer will do this same thing.
as for what to put base coat over, I usually like to spray over 400 grit wet sanded.
