Best and Worst appearance mods

What do you guys think is the best and worst mods you can do to a car for appearance? For example:
IMO
Best:good set of 16 or 17" wheels

Worst:spray painted interior parts

What do you guys think?

worst:
louvers, mud flaps, that chrome wheel well trim ****, lock protector strips, lights under the car, big decals on the rear hatch, running the wrong profile of tires (too large looks like ****, (too small and it won't look right in the wheel well), large and retarded looking spoilers.

best:
17" wheels with meats, lowering springs, ram air hoods (if your car has the ***** to back it up), tint, blackouts.

Worst: Mud flaps, chrome fenders, people with no hood who drive to the cruise, stickers wide tires that go out beyond the fenders.

Best: Exaust, hoods, 16 or 17 rims, superchargers.

woah! most of you think wide muscle car tires look bad? i totally disagree. give me 345/20/r18's on the read any day. they look suave.

i don't care much for chrome anything on our cars, except exhaust tips. chrome looks way out of place.

Here here, chrome is just gaudy unless it is chrome tips on the exhaust. Especially chrome wheels , Dave.

You mean these fender flares: look below. I happen to love how they make my car look but they are going to have to come off when I install the GFX kit, oh well; can't have too much then it would look like $hit.

Yes that is the chrome fender trim that everyone is talking about. I know some people like them but those people usually live on the south side of town if you catch my drift. I am not saying you do but that is where you see that sort of thing most of the time. Those usually go hand in hand with curb feelers and those gold 13" wire wheels that are 10" wide and have a 205 70 13 white wall tire streatched onto it sticking out the side of the car all the way around, just not something that is attractive to most people. I also don't like the "Datona" cowl hoods that have the stupid vents on the side of them or the big shopping cart wings out back. The after market body kits are hidious also... it is ok to want a Ferarri but that does not mean that you have to make your Camaro look like one!

as far as nice mods go it depends on what kind of look you are looking for. wheather you are going for the "hot rod" look with 15" rims runners in the front and big tires out back (that DO NOT stick out the side of the car) or if you are going for the "canyon carver" look with the 17" wheels all around and lowered suspention. I prefer a cars body to look as close to factory as possable. When you get to many extras plastered on it is when it starts looking "getto".

So far car has only been to the track twice and is having sever traction problems but is running 60'-2.34 1/8 mile-9.2 @ 79 MPH.

Hmm, he doesnt like my ground effects, thats okay, i do

I happen to like having the grills and gauge rings painted red, with white gauges

What is important to remember, is that everyone thinks different things look good, and to respect that. I love matching trim on the inside, and i like having a cowl hood with nothing bigger than a mildly modded 305 under the hood. And even though many people ahte it, when i get it as fast as i want it to be, ill then start dressing the engine with paint and / or chrome, because... after all, we buy our cars for ourselves, not for everyone else.

<< about to get flamed for this... I even see Hondas and Imports that i happen to think look very nice. Mustangs too... I like ALL cars, because cars are what i like, it just happnes that firebirds are the ones i liked enough to buy. I think any mod that you enjoy on your car is a good one, you guys can see my taste on my car.

What a good variety of opinions. Remember guys they are only opinions, dont take offense to these replies if someone describes something you have as a bad mod. A couple things I have on my car have came up in here, but I just posted this to see what everyone else likes on their cars. Just to compare ideas.

ADMRLAM,
I think when everyone was talking about spray painted interiors, they meant: shifter plate, AC vents and that type of stuff.(atleast thats what i meant). I also paitned the rings around my gauges because I thought it looks good, but there is always going to be people who dont like it. And thats cool too.

IMHO it is good to change things on your car. It reflects the personality of the owner. Who wants to drive a car that looks like everybody elses. I made clear side marker lights for the front of my car and put blue xenon lights in them and it looks tight. Looks a lot better than the yellow and don't think i'm some riceburner lover. I should get my white faced guages any time now.
As far as rims and tires, i'm looking for the original '92 Firehawk rims to put my car.

I have some things that I don't like and I am sure I like things that other people think is stupid. I think dudelovett has a pretty good list with the exception of tips and white face gauges.

There is one thing that is very popular that I can not get used to and that is the big chrome tips that are used so often on our cars. Personally I think an exhaust system is meant to be heard and not seen.

Remember these are just opinions and everyone has one. It is just some of yours are wrong

Hey Chuck you would love my car then: I have two 3.5" chrome tips on my exhaust, hehehe. I know that you would love to see that. Like everyone says, they do the mods for themselves b/c they enjoy it.
Ryanretherford, that was the GFX kit that I was talking about that Admrlam has. He was the very first one that I saw that ever had it. They sell it through Classic Industries for $695. But mine will be quite different from his car. Beleive me I hate copying people's rides. Mine will have the Knight Rider nose along w/ the GFX & the hood will be the original buldge inducted Firebird hood.

Blah to chrome fenders. Just doesn't look right. "Hello Ghetto"

I just thought of another WORST mod.

4" exaust tips that go a foot or more after the bumper. To make things worse, they usually hang too. LoL.

We got the fugliest thing i have ever seen for cars at my work yesterday. Black Magic "TIRE TRIM". Works like the stuff that makes your tires look wet, but it tints them!!!!! Choose from either blue, green, red, or silver! The green smelled of apples, red of strawberries, very gay if u ask me. Soon i'll be seeing it on all the Hondas around here
Oh ya, those Firebirds you see with people driving around with matresses and 30" TV boxes with the hatch raised up are worst looking

A few more to add to my bad list
-lowered too much!
-not lowered with big rims
-those screaming chicken hood decals
-rain deflectors
-fog lights all over the place
-fat chicks in the passenger seat

I just went for a drive and these were problems that I noticed consistantly around me

admrlam and 82camaro, I really like the body kits on your cars.

As for bras, I like them on light coloured cars (white, yellow, etc.), but I've seen an absolutely perfect black IROC with one, and thought that it detracted from the car a little. It depends alot on the car, tho... My 80 Z28 would look craptacular with a bra on it.

As for wheels, I mostly like 16's and 17's, but I prefer more wheel than open space (for example, I don't like the 2001 SS wheels at all).

Interior touch ups, if done well, can really wake up the look of a car... The red in admrlam's car looks nice to me.

But, like others have said, ultimately it's YOUR choice what to do with YOUR car... Just be kind, and don't jack the *** up 5 inches higher than the front

Worst..Dirty cars...I dont care if the thing is rusted out and the fenders are falling off. Keep it clean inside and out!

Best...A set of fat meats that fill the wheel well. I would love to wide my stock rear rims out to 9.5 inches or so. I like the factory look!

Firebreatha...how did you get the red light in the interior? Is that the original lights changed out or did you add new lights? I want to make my air conditioning and dash lights red to match me stereo display.

black beauty-......i couldnt understand what the crap you are talking about, but...
my favorite mods are:
(1.) very little wheel well gap, for instance, bigger rims and tires and a lil lower, or if you have the stock rims and tires- lower it a lil more.
(2.) custom body mods, like shaving handles, molding the ground FX to the body, cowl hoods in good taste
(3.) black outs, i believe the F-body is just about the only car blackouts look at home on.
(4.) Billet, Billet, Billet! rims, grilles, emblems, interior pieces, pedals, shift *****, billet is 200% better than chrome, especially show polished quality billet.
The worst in my opinion are:
1. mirror tint, 2. really tall spoilers, 3. every wide body kit ive seen made for a 3rd gen, and thats about it.

josh91rs, if you have a 91 rs like your name implies, you can easily get your air conditioning and dash lights to light red to match your stereo. The dash should have 4 194 bulbs in it, and you can change you ac light with 194s, and your shifter light (if an automatic) will be a 194 also. The ac and shifter light should take about 10 minutes max to change. The dash might take an hour. i don't think it will be as bright as FiReBReTHa's though.

im sorry....maybe i took this the wrong way...and i know these are mostly opinions....but come on man....do i say....hey i dont like those fricken lone stars driving f-bodys cuz they cowboy hats and chevys dont mix well. whatevers....go make sure and feed ol bessie out back, she'll make a good dinner for dem mexicans DOWN SOUTH. say hello to my cousin crossin over....hes prolly runnin through your backyard right about now....

Well, Black Beauty, I may be from Tx. but I for one don't like cowboy hats or anything country for that matter. What was meant by that statement was IT LOOKS GHETTO!!!! As in the ghetto is usually on the south side of town. I am sure you were offended by this comment because you are black and think that since your great great grandparents might have been slaves that you must be oppressed for some reason . Get the hell over it. That was the 1800's, this is the 2001! That was then, this is now. And before we get into this big argument about me being a racist, you are wrong. I have lots of friends that are black, mexican, and oriental. Hell, I am married to a lady that is half chinese. So to answer your question, yes, you did misunderstand my quote. It was just my opinion. Let's not get into a big yelling match over this but just know you are not the only one who can be a smartass, and you would have been much better off without the stupid cattle remarks. Just because I am from Texas does not mean that I am a rancher. I live in Dallas which is the 3rd largest city in the US and I can tell you there are more cowboys in LA than Dallas! As for my wifes car here is a pic of it so you can pic out what you don't like, see, I am a nice guy, I am giving you a free oprotunity to pic on our car.... .

No, Mike, we would not mess with your car. We might talk about it...LOL...but we would not touch it. I saw something the other day that was the probably the nastiest thing I have seen in my life...it was around a 98 Firebird that was red with yellow stripes that went from the bottom of the front bumper cover over the hood, roof, and decklid, and down under the rear bumper cover. And to top it off, he had yellow wheels! That was the nastiest Ronald McDonald car I have ever seen! But I didn't key it!!

I would have to vote NO on the following:

Chrome fender covers (sorry, Mike) not only do they not belong on a third gen, they don't belong ANYWHERE! Well, let them put them on the Escorts and Toyota Corollas ... I could care less ... I still think they look gay.

Wide assed rims with teenie whitewall tires that purposely stick out beyond the fender ... Even worse!

Chrome gas door (although we don't have to worry about that unless you chrome your license plate ...LOL!)

Clear tail lights .... On some cars they look good ... the new Lexuses that come that way from the factory ... look decent. On our cars ... HELL NO!!

Louvers ... what can I say. As far as looks, no. But functionality ... I suppose most will argue that they really do work. But would take a LOT of convincing for me to plop them on. The right ones don't look really that bad. If someone held a gun to my head and said "put chrome fender covers or louvers on!" I'd slap the louvers on. Then kick the guy's *** with the gun ... then probably take them off again

Ferarri wannabe ground effects ... some look good, but come on ... Ferarri ... Camaro ... I realize we do love our cars ... but don't make them look like something they're not!

Extendo Commando two-tiered spoilers. Really. What in the hell do they do except attract my attention to make me laugh!

Blue bulbs for headlights, driving lights. Well, I'll probably get flamed for this, but you know, opinions are like *******s, everybody's got one. So here goes, they may look good on sleek little bmw's, etc., but for our cars ... no. That's a new fad on an old dog ... just doesn't go right in my head. Leave the crap stock ... or a little brighter, but leave to blue to the ricers.

Lights under the car ... that fad went out down here in Miami pretty much. I still see a couple of late entries, but I did see them up north a bit ... uhmm .... no.

Putrid metallic puke swirl paint jobs ... Need I saw more?

White raised letters on IROCs. If they didn't come from the factory that way, don't put them on!

Bras. I know a few people with them on so I won't crack on them much. I'll just say you won't see them on my car unless the front end is sagging real bad!

In summary, I have more respect for those who keep their rides pretty much stock looking. There are a few mods that I've seen that look pretty nice. ZR-1 wheels on IROCs ... that looks pretty sweet, but my car is staying with the factory look. Remember, these are opinions of myself and no other (unless you agree ... ).

well 1st off ill describe the best car.

a 1991-92 Z-28 rear spoiler replaced with RS one (opinion)

onyx black, with purple ghost stripes

17" Aluminum racing wheels. like new SS or ZO6 wheels.

dropped 1.5" in front and 1.25" in rear.

tires that reach the factory fender flares, but dont pass.

a sweet system, with no rattles from inside or outside.

4th gen cloth power seats

white faced overlays with ice blue lights. (i only seem to like white faces on 3rd gens.)

and 450-600 horse power. i know its a little small but lets not go over board j/k

now the worst.

1982 firebird

Wheels are 14" $50 a set wheels.

Paint is primer/rust.

actual bullet holes.

seats are held together by seat covers.

the seat covers are lepord or cow print.

pop-up headlights rigged so they wont go down.

1ft "commando" style wing

and last and least: (i have seen it)

8" body Lift kit, and mudding tires. Aww!! i almost cried. and blew up the car to put it out of its missery. (it was even primer/rust colored)

That is ok Black beauty... it is no big deal. I know there are gehtto's every where but 9 timeout of 10 they are more evident on the south side of town.. that is all. No hard feelings anyway....

On the topic of the best things I like to on the whole keep the car as stock looking as possible however if the colour combo is right I like the headlight and taillights blacked out and a decent tint (sadly my car is black so that would defeat the purpose). I also like raised white letters on the tires if you have decent rubber.

Worst things
DON'T PUT A GIANT CB RADIO ANTENNA MOUNTED TO THE BACK OF YOUR CAR AND PLEASE PLEASE DON'T STICK A STUPID F@#%^^G RACOON TAIL ON THE END!!!

Also any fin higher than the 91-92s is tacky.

Oh yeah and some idiot in my neighbourhood has a late 80's IROC with those screamer mufflers like you see on VW's - Don't be that guy ....

Cheers

The worst thing you can do to anything is to drop the car about 2" above the ground so it can't go over speed bumps, put little bitty *** wire wheels on it that stick out from the car about 4", and paint it the most irritating shade of lime green with blue stripes running down the middle. A 3rd gen camaro came up where I work to get his oil changed. I nearly laughed in his face when I saw what he was driving. It was the worst car EVER.
The best car I've ever seen was a black 89 camaro. Cowl hood and flawless paint. It was dropped about 1 1/2" all around with almost no wheel gap. 17x9.5 centerline wheels on the front and 17x11 wheels on the back. Don't ask me how he got them to fit without rubbing or sticking out, but he did and they looked AWESOME! The whole car was superclean and under the hood was the best appearance mod you can have. 383 motor with an ATI procharger making 12 pounds of boost. Oh yeah. There is nothing more intimidating or jealousy inspiring than a fat blower on a big motor under the hood.
