Ok, well I know people say not to do this, but I want to change the color of my car. The people who had it previously painted it with color that wasn't quite stock anyway. What all would be entailed with changing the color to black?

You need to make the body as straight as can be. Black will show all imperfections in body work from a butt print on the hood to a bird dropping a cherry pit and making a tiny dent. With any color change you should paint all the parts that are visible like door jams and under the hood area the same body color you're changing to. That is unless, you don't want to or have other plans for those areas. Again, make sure the body is perfect!

That's just the basic of basics of what needs to be done. I've left out a bunch of stuff because lots of other threads have covered on what needs to be done in prep work. I'm going from white to black on my car sometime this summer. Need to get the money up for paint first though hehe. Did I say before that the body needs to be perfect? because it does

It's as simple painting all visible parts of the car black. Most paint places only quote you for painting the outside of the car, so the door jambs, hatch jamb, and under the hood costs extra. At a minimum for a drastic change in color, be sure to have the jambs painted. If your original color is fairly neutral, in the same family as the color you're going to, or the same as your secondary color if you're going two-tone, then you can probably get away with not painting the engine bay and the hood's underside.

BTW, good choice of color.

thanks for all the responses. Can anybody tell me anything about claybarring your vehicle and what it would do. I've got a lot of those little indentations and stuff, nothing like big enough for body work, but stuff that would show up in the black paint job, is this what claybar is for?

claybarring....ive never done it but i think its just to get imperfections out of your paint. You should have those dents filled in and stuff when you get it painted, dents on black cars show up like a white guy at a rap concert!

I stated this before, CLAYBAR IS THE STUFF FROM THE GODS! It will make your existing paint look great. When I bought the car, it had so much crap and crud on it, the white paint almost looked grey. After the calybar treatment, it look 100% beter. It just takes a little time to do it but its well worth it.

Hey 85 T/A WS6, awesome car. Is the bumper cover you have original. Thats the exact one that I want with the ground fx's. And the seats are incredible. How comfy are they and is it worth the money to get them?

BLACK IS THE BEST COLOR TO CHANGE TO. BE PREPARED TO DO TOUCH UPS AND TO DISCOVER AREAS THAT THE PAINT SHOP MISSES. A CAN OF BLACK SPRAY PAINT WILL EASILY HANDLE THIS FOR YOU. ALSO WETSANDING WILL GIVE YOUR CAR A GREAT SHINY FINISHED LOOKED. I WENT FROM "EARL SHIBE BLUE" TO CUSTOM BLACK AND HAVE NEVER REGRETED IT. JUST BE PREPARED TO WASH TWICE A WEEK BECAUSE A DIRTY BLACK CAR IS A MORAL SIN!

Hi Pookey

Im glad to say my car is 98% original, the only changes have been the addition of a hood bird and a Pioneer SuperTuner. The bumper cover has been "bumped" once but has been unchanged. The car has been repainted too.

There is an aftermaket co. that sells the GFX

As far as the seats go, they are the best you could get on any 85 F Body. They are nowhere to be found though, and the few that remain are pretty messed up. They are real comfy and keep you from sliding around in the turns.

Don

Hello all,

I have a 1992 Camaro, white. I was reading through thr posts and noticed you were talking about something called claybarring. What is this and what does it do? My white is slowly turning to a grey color. And especially under the bre it has a line. Will a good wash and wax take this out or should I use something special???

A.

I use Zaino Polish, its the best out there
This is from the Zaino website and should explain how claybar works.

Don

Z-18 ClayBar

Z-18 ClayBar removes imbedded contamination from the paint finish that cannot be removed using conventional cleaning methods. Z-18 is non-abrasive and works like no cleaner, compound or chemical can and is safe for use on all paint finishes. The following contaminants are a general description of some of the contaminants that Z-18 ClayBar removes. *Rail dust- is actually tiny, sharp bare metal shavings that can adhere and imbed in the paint finish and cause serious damage when left untreated. Over 70% of new vehicles are transported from the factory using the rail system, therefore rail dust is present on new vehicles. There are many instances where a vehicle travels or is parked near a railroad in which case the finish is infected with rail dust. *Brake dust- similar to rail dust, brake dust is also in the form of tiny, sharp bare metal shavings. In recent years, asbestos brake pads were replaced with metallic brake pads, which are actually brake pads made from tiny metal or metallic shavings. Anytime a vehicle is braking; brake dust is disbursed into the air and onto the paint finish. Since the brake dust is now actually tiny particles of bare metal, this form of brake dust can seriously damage the paint finish when left untreated. * Industrial fallout- is the general term used for pollution and can be found in many forms. Eventually, pollution settles onto the paint finish of all vehicles and can cause serious damage when left untreated. *Tree sap, Road tar, Bug residue, Paint overspray, acid rain deposits and other contaminants that adhere and imbed into the paint finish can cause damage when left untreated. Contaminants that are left on the paint surface can weaken the protective properties and even cause serious damage to the paint finish after a short time. Z-18 ClayBar is optional, but highly recommended as the ultimate way to truly clean the paint finish and prepare the surface for Zaino polish.

Black is an awesome color and it does require more care. Dirt, dust, and debris damages all paint jobs but it shows up on black much easier, that's why the constant cleaning is necessary for dark colors.

Also with waxing you have to choose the "right" cloths otherwise rag imprint swirls will show up more readily.

Most dark colors look best if you will take them to the body shop every couple of years at least and have them machine glazed to remove scratches and swirls.

When you paint your car whatever you do don't use a single stage black. Go with basecoat black and at least 3 coats of clear.
