Undercar neon questions

I just picked up a set and i am going to install them tomorrow. Any tips from those who have done it themselves? And if your just going to complain that neons are rice, save it. I think they look great on 3rdgens.

congrats, what brand did you get? i suggest to get the car up as high as you can. just make sure that the wires stay away from anything hot like the exhaust or anything like that, and way from the tires or any moving parts. also, make sure that any connections are sealed good.

good luck

i would put neons under my car only if they were the same color as the body, kinda like a subtle accent.....not bright *** neon green ones on a bright purple car... im actually buying some smaller 16-18"turquiose neons to put under the bottom lip of my dash pad(teal green camaro) im still not sure about under car neons, i hit frame rails going into dive shop parking lot....so id probaly hide them in the scoops in my GFX post some pics when you get them done.....

I think they look awesome on third gens too. A buddy of mine put some on his truck and he got a sheet of lexan(found at most any hardware store) and used it to make sort of shield around the light bars. Now granted this won't save them from something like a curb, but it does keep rocks and debris from hitting them.

Well they are all mounted up. It took me about a 1/2 day to do. It wasnt that hard at all. The part that gave me the most trouble was finding ways to route the wires for the neons. But overall an easy install. I took some pics tonight and as soon as i get them developed and scanned ill post them.

I've had blue neons underneath my teal rs since 98 before the lil bitch rice boys made it there lil fad and ill tell you what man they look great, anyone who calls me a ***** id like to just smack its not my fault they try to make horsepower from economy cars, but anywas back to the instalation. There very easy to put in, they should probably take about two hours, just mount them on the side kinda buy your ground effects as high as you can get them cause if you dont you ll see the bulb from the distance. the front put on the piece of plastic that curves straight up after the front ground effect. The rear ones easy right by the back bumper, run your wires underneath through the wheel wells behind splash guard etc, and through the hood underneath the car. Best of luck, you should have no prob

only took you 2 hours??? took me like 8. I ran the wires through the passenger side ground fx to all meet by the battery. even the driver side I ran up over the axle through the passenger side. that's how it's done, done right. later on i added a 36" tube on my speaker box, but later took it out. run the wire for the switch through the passenger side, right where your feet are. you'll find a hole in the firewall beneath the carpeting about 2" diameter. just take your time. seal each tube with clear rtv at the ends and where the wire meets the light. wrap the wires with electrical tape. time consuming, but worth the trouble.

Well, a good neon install should from any installer that has done it before take no more than 3 hours. Sealing the tubes are not necessary, and in the long run just cause more trouble if you break a tube and wish to continue to use the old lexan protector tube. In my RS, I'd have to say it was the 2nd or 3rd thign i did to it and it took all of an hour and a half. The routing of the wires is the most time consuming, however, for me ive installed dozens of these kits so for the average person it should take about 3 hours unless you just really like to take your time and what not. On some cars i was able to route the wires into the frame work which not only hide the wires, but also protect them.. Switch mounting also takes a while because some people are picky where they put their switches.

In my rs, i have a standard 4 tube kit on the underside of the car, another 4 12" custom bent kit for the interior, which consists of one tube under each seat and one under each side of the dash. I mounted both transformers on the frame in the front of the car right behind the battery. Switch location is different for both, as the under car is in the blockoff plate under the headlights and the interior is in a custom fabricated ash tray panel i made from abs plastic. One thing about any wireing in a car, from experience, always, ALWAYS fuse power wires. If you dont you can/will be regretting it. (Not to mention neon is high voltage)

as to installing under car. If i remember correctly i hung my rear tube behind the bumper cover before the well, the sides i mounted to the ground effects belive it or not and i have never had a problem breaking any of them, and thats with 3 + Years of use. The front i am trying to remember, i think i hungit from behind the front air damn, but im not sure. Another note, Wire ties are a neon installers best friend. Also be srue that you get your endcapson each tube securely so that you dont have any connection problems. all this is probably useless now since you already had finished, but its just my .02 worth. If you got any questions or problems just let me know.

yes, actually you do need to seal the tubes. especially for cars laying low to the ground. the first puddle you drive through... they short out. take it from experience. maybe yours came from the factory waterproof... mine however didn't. so before you go making determinations based on your brand of neons, make sure it attributes to all brands.

Im not really worried about the puddles. I dont drive my car in the rain anyways so there is really nothing to get worried about. And if there is a puddle in the road i alway drive around it.

usually a water puddle short is from a bad install in my experience. Im not saying that your installs are bad, but simply that is my experience, and I have hung many a kit of neon.
