Which F-Body is cooler?
This question has been playing in my mind for a couple of days now... I own, and love a Green 1989 IROC-Z. But i think Trans-Ams are cooler. Maybe its just the name, or maybe its that sleek, sexy front end(IMO) on the '82-'90 birds, then again maybe its the ten year old boy syndrome from when my parents owned one back in the day, or the fact that a Trans-Am was ALMOST my first 3rd gen. But i digress. I love my IROC, but i think that Trans-Ams and Firebirds are cooler. What do you guys think? Which car is the coolest muscle out of the 80's?
Re: Which F-Body is cooler?
I bought an 88' GTA back in 89' that I just loved. I picked it over an IROC or Vette. I loved the body, especially after I lowered it, and I thought the interior was so cool.
Now, after being 3rd gen less for almost 17 years I'm looking for a black or blue 87'-89' IROC. I'm now loving the hard lines of the ROC, inside and outside. I still think the TA has better door panels, but that's no big deal.

I have always been a IROC Luver. I have always appreciated the mods from Ram Air hoods on other cars. When the ram air came out, It was gorgeous. When I bought my car new, I was deciding between a GTA and the IROC. Actually, how I decided to get the roc was a coin toss.

Re: Which F-Body is cooler?
That is the only reason that I put a turbo daytona hood on mine because I thought it needed something. I liked the louver concept, even though it wasn't functional. I believe the last version of functional scoops was on the cross fire injection on the 83 or 84 model. If you have ever removed your hood from an IROC, you had better have 2 people available, you will have your hands full. It is one heavy SOB...

Re: Which F-Body is cooler?
I bought my camaro to be closer to the trans am. My dream car (yeah I know, out of all of em I picked this one?) is the 02 trans am white WS6.
I bought my camaro to get into the camaro/firebird state of cars, learn about em, figuring the tips and tricks out of em.
To me the 3rd gen GTA's looks nice and the 70's autocross style and lastly the 02 TA.
But, dont get me wrong I also LOVE LOVE LOOOVVVEE my iroc as well, its mean, sleek and muscular. Plus it gets the ladies with the t-tops. WOOT WOOT
So all in all I believe they are equal as they ARE equal. But wouldnt mind havign 1 of each...HAHA

Re: Which F-Body is cooler?
Honesty i am mixed...
First gen - Camaro
Second Gen - Firebird
Thirdgen - IROC over T/A or GTA, Firebird over S/C (don't like the nose or sans gfx)
Fourth gen - Firebird
Fifth - well have you seen the renderings for the Firebird (MAKE THIS)... but as it stands, Camaro.

Re: Which F-Body is cooler?
i do want one of each, but i am a college student working part-time. There is a sweet trans am (the one i ALMOST got) down the street, red with t-tops, very comfortable interior, 305 Carbeurated (i think its a 305...). But it has a blown headgasket, and i needed something to drive everyday, and my 305 TPI runs like new and gets good mpg when i stay off of it (and i plan on keeping this car forever, no matter what my father says). Very cool to hear your opinions, keep em comin!
oh, and conratulations on the 84, Louis, welcome to TGO.

Re: Which F-Body is cooler?
I've had both now, and I have to say that it's like picking a girlfriend, its' just personal taste. No two are the same, some you like more than others, but if you make your decison strictly on looks, you'll probably be disappointed.
I have to say I feel that a GTA is a great combination of price looks and equipment (except a 5 speed manual is pretty rare). But a similary equipped Iroc is also an awesome car.

Re: Which F-Body is cooler?
"Which F-Body is cooler?" the third-gen
with the proper mods (paint, wheels, etc.) they both look great, but something that makes me prefer the camaro over the firebird is the dash cluster. the camaro's dash is simple the way a muscle car should be, but on the other hand pontiac did improve the front end or at least changed it throughout the years. that is why i own 3 verts two being camaros and the other a firebird

Re: Which F-Body is cooler?
Depends on what you mean by cool.
In general, just on looks:
Firebirds are more modern, sleek, curvey, smooth.
Camaros are more aggressive, edgey, muscular.

Re: Which F-Body is cooler?
Did IROC's come in green?? I don't remember ever seeing one. A green RS but not a IROC or Z28....
Have seen green TA's. They are nice. I always thought the 91-92 TA's were missing something that the earlier versions had from a styling standpoint. I don't think they project the "toughness" that the 85-90 had. Certainly far less than their 2nd Gen cousins.
I always found it intersting that the 1st Gen Camaros had "the look" yet the 2nd Gen TA's grabbed it. They lost it to the 3rd Gen Camaro & picked it up again in the 4th Gen..

By cool i meant, well, cool, what do you think is cool?
No IROCs didnt come in green, but they should have. It's a custom job, I'll have pics soon, black spoiler and ground effects have yet to be done. I agree that the 4thgen firebirds have the more aggressive body styling...

Re: Which F-Body is cooler?
I'd take a blue 89 L98 IROC, a TTA white on gold, or GTA red on black
I don't like the pinched front end of firebirds that much, but the ones I named

Re: Which F-Body is cooler?
I spoke with my wallet, its a GTA for me
However, this does not mean I can't drool over a particularly sexy IROC or later Z28. Or even an RS. They sexy too, but i'm a TransAm guy.
