What paint to use for interior plastics?
What paint to use for interior plastics?
I want to paint my grey plastic peices in my 92' firebird to match my black carpet. What type of paint should I buy?
I wanna paint things like the door panels, center console, cup holder, sub woofer covers, firewall etc. Thanks!

Krylon Fusion has been recommended on this site before so I tried it and so far so good. The interior plastics look great and have for the past year. Some use primer, I did not. I cleaned the plastic, made sure it was dry and sprayed several coats. Check out your question on the "search" function at the top of this page for more info. This is the first time I have painted interior parts and had them come out perfect and last.

Re: What paint to use for interior plastics?
Raz, I just went out to my Iroc and vigorously scratched some of the plastic surfaces I painted with my fingernails and there were no scuff marks and no paint came off. I`ve only painted the hard plastics, I would not paint vinyl surfaces or seats, door panels. I used Krylon Fusion black satin #2421 for plastic. The can lists the substrates you can use it on. The part # is just above the bar code on the can. The last time, 15 years ago, I painted the interior plastics in my `74 El Camino it was a disaster. I spent a lot of time on prep and getting the paint that was recommended and a year later it was peeling off so I was hesitant to paint my Iroc but so far so good. I replaced my seats with 4th gen black along with new black door panels. Anything subject to heavy usage I would not paint, replace as you can afford it.

Krylon Plastic Fusion works with light coats or one light coat and its something you can get about any hardware or auto store. I've used it on alcohol-cleaned polished plastic in 40 degree temperatures and the paint stuck on to the surface with no problems. In fact I had to sand it off to get it off the plastic.

Duplicolor makes a plastic and vinal pain for interior parts worked realy good on my but i took the extra step on my plastics and sprayd them with bull dog adhisave permoter first. plastics look good done but if you dont take the nessasary steps like cleaning befor spraying they will flake then your worse off than when you started

Yeah that is true someone would be worse off without prep. I got Krylon Fusion for plastic about 4.17 or so a can. Wiped the plastics down with a damp bath towel, then sprayed during mid nightime. It's been sitting for about two days but I think it needs more time to cure so i'm gonna let it sit longer. Satin matched very close. So far so good

I have never used Krylon Fusion but the good thing about the duplicoler is that it is a paint but works like a die so you can also do your door panals and after it is drie it is ther you cant barlie scratch it or git it to chip even by bending the paint actualy stretches and reforms as it bends.

Re: What paint to use for interior plastics?
The Fusion does work very well, but then again its all in the prep work. I used simple green to clean my parts first due to alchohol drying the parts out too much. I spray about 3 light coats, then waited about an hour then used some satin clear to seal it, then 2 more light coats of the fusion, and it looks perfect. As for the cloth, get some of that Rit dye, some dishwashing gloves, a wash cloth that you can destroy, and a bowl of HOT water... Mix the dye in the water, dip cloth, wring it out, and wipe the fabric... really easy...
