Well first i just bought some iroc replica wheels and when i put them on my car i didnt really like all that chrome on there....so i was thinking of painting it black but not all of it just the stripe and around the spokes...but i didnt really want to sand it so the paint could stick cuz i dont want to mess up the rim...so i used some thing different to make it black....

heres the before picture...

heres when i was working on it

so what i did was i used black super 33+ electrical tape...so what i was wondering if it will stay on well at least worth to do it..what do you think?...well im a find out...the reason i used tape was cuz i could just peel it off if it doesnt work and back to the original chrome wheels with out any scraches...oh by the way i just did the stripe...so tell me what you think and if u know any other way to permanently make it black please tell me...

here are some more pics

Go for it. I like the contrast of the black. I don't know why they don't make them like that. I was thinking about getting a set but tooooo much chrome.

Re: LOOK AT WHAT I DID TO MY WHEELS
now scuff them down and shoot some paint in the spokes. Electrical tape won't cut it for any amount of time, plus when it gets hot it gets gooey and can melt.

Re: LOOK AT WHAT I DID TO MY WHEELS
The rims look better with the black stripe imo I am an electrician and I can tell you the tape will not last long at all, that's not the application it was meant for.

Re: LOOK AT WHAT I DID TO MY WHEELS
I think it looks pretty good. If you do not want to paint them go to a sign/graphics shop and have them cut you some strips of black vinyl to put in there, It will last and wont come off.

That looks pretty good. I vote for the black instead of the red. The black looks really good with the black convertible top......

Re: LOOK AT WHAT I DID TO MY WHEELS
Looks great - and I believe it will work. 55-> 57 Chevy have black on the hubcaps. Someone came up with the tape idea precut to fit the slotted areas - works great - good luck!

I am new to this website and since you have a convertible I wondered if you could direct me to a solution. I am having my daughter's '89 convertible repainted....there is clear plastic or clear tape type material that is on the paint where the convertible top rests. The material has yellowed and I wondered where a replacement can be obtained....any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Charlesforce@comcast.net

Definitely don't do that. My family owns a graphics shop, and I work with Vinyl a lot. It will have the same problems as electric tape. If it gets too warm, the vinyl will try to expand, and you'll have lumps up and down. Just paint it.

What size rims? I got a 89 Bright red IROC, and 17" reps are on my list. IMHO i like the chrome.

No true! I own a vinyl shop and have used it on many wheels including the car I race. I have never had trouble with it coming off or even changing color due to heat. I have even went as far as to use it on painted brake calipers and it lasted more than 6 months placed right on the caliper.

I have had had mine so hot there was smoke coming off the brakes when I finished 5 laps and still no problems with the decals on the wheels. Here is a pic of some decals that have been on my wheels for 2 years and have more laps on them than I could count and is drove on the street on sunny days.

I even use it in the engine compartment without any issues. here is the valve covers that I have with vinyl I put on them and have had 0 issue with them also.

Re: LOOK AT WHAT I DID TO MY WHEELS
IMO I like the black better, because it compliments your black top and ties it in.To me the red's to much.Just my .02

Either way it looks better than all chrome.

Re: LOOK AT WHAT I DID TO MY WHEELS
If you're worried about painting and sanding, try just hand-painting on some self-etching primer. You won't have to scuff up your wheels trying to sand them. Or, you could sand them by wrapping some sandpaper around the end of a pen and getting that in there.

I agree that the red is too much. The black does tie the top in nicely.

+1 on the vinyl living.

I've been doing signs (vinyl, neon, wood.....Whatever!) for about 10 years now & you gotta be using some CHEAP vinyl for wheel heat to be effecting it badly.
