OK all, I need some suggestions. I am going to repaint my 1991 factory color-keyed wheels, which are way faded and nearly pink compared to the rest of my awesome red car.

The amount they faded doesn't make sense to me. Wouldn't they have used the same paint on the wheels as the car itself?

Anyway, suggestions on how to strip off what's there? I'm thinking that, then primer, then paint, from cans. But someone mentioned powder coating them to me. I'll just go ahead and confess ignorance to that.

Has anyone repainted these with success? And how do I keep them from fading like mad again?

I sent mine of to be powder coated.

Just some black, but they did the inside of where the tire will sit....The case of the "spokes" & the inside loops, that would be visible from the outside.

Basically....Everything was powder coated black EXCEPT the outer lip.

I used a crayon to mark what I wanted black & what polished. Of course, I asked first, about the crayon. They said sure, no problem.

$100 each.

Unfortunately, I don't have that kind of money right now, which is why I am redoing them myself in the first place.

 

I've been thinking of this lately as well. Around me there is a really nice red Dodge Magnum and he has black rims with a body matched red lip. It looks incredible and I was thinking of doing something similar with my 91 rims after I paint my car white.

Arctic White car, black tint and HL buckets, black rims with Arctic white lip. Sounding pretty good to me, but just my .02

 

Colored wheels seems to be a common thing for Lambos.

I have a set of these wheels on my 91 S10. Bought them out of a field and the paint was shot and the clear had turned yellow. I stripped them with airplane stripper you buy at advance or auto zone... The gel seems to work better. Just apply and let sit for a few and the clear and paint will bubble, don't let it get on the tire, tape them up if they're still on the wheel. Once stripped down, clean them with lacquer thinner real good to get any old armor all off them to prevent fish eyeing. After dry, I sanded the inside part I wanted to paint a bit and then taped the rest of the wheel that is aluminum. It took about 2 cans of good spray paint from any retailer and one can of clear coat/sealer. I've actually painted two sets of these the same way, my dad had a set a few years back the same way, faded pink and I used the same method with great results. Once painted, get some never dull polish and polish the aluminum and they look pretty sharp for less than $15 bucks. Takes a lil work and time though. I've attached a picture of the wheels on my s10. what i would do is acid treat them and then paint and spray some clear overtop of that i wouldnt even bother priming them this is what i plan to do with mine.

A friend of mine is checking out this sandblasting box they have at his work, uses beads, he said. Anyone have experience with something like that.

Got a friend who is checking out getting and loaning me a set of wheels/tires, so I have time to do these right the first time.
