Help with Trans Am, Is it worth 5Gs?

Hi guys, I have a good friend that is interested in a 1985 Trans Am. The person wants $5000 for it. On the sign it said it was an automatic V8, withit only 36,000 miles on it. And has new tires.

But it has a little rust on the front right fender (I dont think you can see it in the pics). And it had a small crack on the right side front noes. And has very minor paint flaws all over the car. Also, the spoiler has a large split in the spoiler that you can see in the third pic. The interior seems to be in pretty good shape, but it was hard to see in it cause it had so much dust and dirt all over the car.

So. I want to know is it worth $5000. And how much it would cost to buy a new front nose for the car. Also what model is it? I dont no anything about trans ams, i no the models of camaros like irocs, rs's, and sport coupes. But I have no clue about trans ams. And how much horse power.

Thanks for all ur input in advance guys!

4k$ tops, but a collector or someone that thinks our cars are gold will disagree.

Looks nice... BUT I dont think its worth 5k$.
Chances are its a 305 and has 200hp or less... (Not 100% sure)

Offer him 3k$

Hmm 5k seems pretty steep. I got my 88 5.7L ROC for 3k. Granted it needed a little work. It is 3 years older and probably slower, did you talk to the owner at all? I have no idea what T/A models are so cant help you there. Id say throw anywhere from 3-4k cash in his face and he wont refuse.

BTW can Eli fit in there? He looks bigger than the car.

Re: Help with Trans Am, Is it worth 5Gs?

there is no way its worth 5K. That spoiler will cost almost $700 to fix (the right way), the front end will cost probably $100 for a good used one, and another $200 to paint it. AND you will need new decals to put on it after you paint the front end... It is a 305, maybe a tpi which means with the auto it will be slow as syrup. $3500 max taking into consideration it only has 36,xxx miles on it.. That is funny as hell though, I just moved from Wisconsin, to Las Vegas and the plate frame says Las Vegas on it... When I was registering my car in Wisconsin I remember when you have collector plates in you do not have to have it emissions tested there. I did not like the way they looked though so I passed.

Not worth 5g's in my opinion.

Looks like you need to buy shoes and socks before you buy that trans am though, haha.

Re: Help with Trans Am, Is it worth 5Gs?

Being its an '85 It's got the 305 in it. I wouldnt give nomore then 3k$ for it.

My V6 would outrun that car, lol. Unless the guy doesnt care about it being fast I would keep looking for a 87+ Trans Am with the 350 in it.

Well, I'm tight, and I've been told I live in 3rd gen country - so my opinion may be skewed a tad - but I wouldn't pay over $1500 personally. I only paid $800 for my 1992 RS with nothing wrong with it. Around here, you can get 4th gen LT1 Z28's all day for $3k (so I did ).

Re: Help with Trans Am, Is it worth 5Gs?

It's definitely not worth $5k. I'd say somewhere between $3500 and $4000. It has low mileage but has quite a few problems for a low milage car. If it wasn't for those problems it worth easily be worth more than $5k.

The car looks like it probably has original paint but it has the wrong body side moldings so you may want to check for signs of being repainted.

Re: Help with Trans Am, Is it worth 5Gs?

I paid well under that for my 30k mile, garage kept, 100% perfect 86 TA. Absolutely nothing wrong with it and clean as a new car. It was a 305 carb car (LG4), but still.

Its not going to be a TPI like someone suggested. It will probably run ok, but will be pretty slow. Unless your friend is used to a 4cyl beater...or has never driven. Then it'll be ok for a bit.

Honestly, having a straight rust free body is most important when shelling out money for a thirdgen in my opinion. As long as the interior is in decent shape with all the bits and peices, and there is no rust, the rest can be fixed relatively easily. When you start getting into floor repair and panel replacement, the price I would pay really takes a dip.

Bottom line, Ide try to talk them down...no way would I pay 5k for that car.

J.

Re: Help with Trans Am, Is it worth 5Gs?

I agree with everyone else, that car is definitely not worth 5k. I got my 89 GTA for 3k and all it needs is cosmetic work (new emblems, paint job, and maybe new front seats). For what that car is and what it has under the hood i would not go over 2,500 3,000 even with the low miles.

Re: Help with Trans Am, Is it worth 5Gs?

i will agree with everybody else, not worth 5k.

if you are still interested, check it for rust. Get on the ground and check out the underside, floor pans, radiator support, rear bumper ext, major rust spots, no point spending good money on a low mileage car thats rotted.
