Driving in winter with polished rims?

Ok I want to polish my IROC rims as it's done in the tech article. I have two small cans of the mother's aluminum polish and some paint stripper. But I only have one plastic cone brush dremel bit. Will this be enough for all 4? I can't find these bits anywhere except in a fairly pricey "polishing kit" that only includes one brush per kit.

But the real question is, since I'll have to drive the Iroc through at least one more winter, how can I keep these from rusting? Will wax be enough? Can I use a good clearcoat spraypaint or will that look like crap? I have until the end of the month until I move 700 miles away to the east coast for a new job and I won't have the resources I do now to work on the car. Thanks for all replies!

Dude if I was in your shoes I would definitely look into purchasing a crap set of rims for the winter if you are going to polish your iroc rims. You can find a decent set of 15X7 Z28 style 5 spoke rims for $75 (my friend did, so it can be done). I ran my beautiful polished centerline rims last winter and by the time winter was over they were all pitted and they looked like hell (BTW they were clearcoated) Do yourself a favor... Trust me

Is it just the snow and salt that destroy the polish? Here in Oklahoma we are lucky to see it snow twice a year and usely it's gone a few hours later.

Don't do it. I almost ruined my chrome rims driving on them OCCASIONALLY in the same winter(I am not far from So. Bend)you had. I am never driving my car in the winter again but if I did I would NEVER use my polished/chrome rims. I had a cover on my car and just the moister seemed to affect the rims. Both snow and salt will kill your rims and damage any decent paint job. Once I polished the rims it was a little less affected by the snow/salt but that was a lot of work. BTW you can use a SOS pad to remove the pitting on your rims. MY ADVICE IS TO BUY ANOTHER SET OF CHEAP RIMS FROM THE RESALE TIRE SHOP OR JUNK YARD.

Yeah driving around up here sucks in winter. Now that i got the Z, i think i might invest in a really cheap beater?

No civics for me, except for maybe a winter car. Looks like I'll get a set of winter wheels if I decide to polish them. All depends on what I'm "allowed" to do at whatever apt complex I'll be at. Thanks guys.
