My Custom Headlight Covers *pics*

Thought I'd share a few pics I took this evening of the headlight covers I made.
I have a set of the regular ones, but everyone knows how long they usually sit on the car..

I made mine from an old set of taillight covers. These covers are within the headlight pocket, leaning right on the actual headlights. They stand straight up and down, and are fastened by "tucking" the outer ends (which have the 90° turn that are towards the license plate on the covers they were made from) around the low beams. (Hope that made a little sense).

I would think these covers would look the sweetest on a car with body colored headlight pockets.

Pics:

My apologies for the pics being of a fair quality, but it started getting dark a little bit +I just got my digital camera today, so these were some of the first pics I've taken with it....

Hey man great job, they look great! I wanna borrow your idea, too. I am a little unclear on how the stay on and where you cut the original covers could you make a diagram maybe? that would be soo great if you could!

Okay, I threw together a quick sketch in Photoshop to show where it comes from of the taillight cover.

The "corner" that is left on the "new" cover, goes in between the outside of the low beam light and the front clip and will hold the cover in place as it is a tight fit.

Make SURE you cut the initial piece a bit larger than it needs to be as it will need to be carefully trimmed to fit the pocket perfectly. Otherwise light will "leak out" around the cover when you have them on - and that wouldn't look too good..

Let me know if there are other questions

Hey, thanks Ken. One more question, what did you use to cut the blackout?

No problem!
I used an angle grinder with a cutting disk. I also used a dremel - it is nice for cleaner cuts. It takes some more time (I did the first one with a dremel), but you are less likely to mess up.

Man me and my buddy made those for his IROC about 8 years ago ,, we used plexieglass and channels from someother headlight cover so all you had to do was pop the hood and slide the blackouts up to remove them

Wow excellent job man, very nice, but one question. Is there anything lining the outside of the covers in order to preven any scratching of the paint?

XxMoLexX, I've tested them up to 90mph, and NO problem! I don't even see HOW they could fall out, they are stuck in there..

nikh23, No, I haven't made any lining - but that would probably be smart in the long run. I did think about something like what comes on the GTS headlight covers, but I would prefer it to be something narrower.
If anyone has any good ideas for what to use for that purpose, please share!
However, it doesn't seem like an immediate problem as long as the fit is good!

That is a hard area to protect from scratching. I was going to say maybe line the edge with felt, but with all the dirt that gets kicked up it could still scratch. Maybe if you suspended them off the paint, by using the clear hook-it plastic velcro-like tabs that they sell at Autozone. GT Stylings had then just for healight and taillight covers. With it you could suspend them in the air just enough to clear. Then they would hold the cover out just enough from the headlights that they would protect the cover from being scratched by the headlight on the backside! Yes/no?

personally i don't like it one bit.

don't get mad at me or anything, i'm just saying.... it looks retarded... it looks like you just shoved a piece of plastic infront of your headlights. i don't like it... what can i say.

These were my custom headlight covers from back in the day when people were doing headlight covers with a cut out style design. They were held on with the GT stylings plastic heavy duty velco stuff I spoke of above. Worked very well to keep them on.

Just thought I would share

But, I like my pop up delete much better!

Hey ChevyKen could you post a pic of the lights on (both including the high beams) so I can get an idea of how well the light shines through with the blackouts on... Thanks

Whooaa, talk about walking up from the dead
This is from abou 1.5 years ago, and I no longer use these covers, especially after I did the H4 Crystal Clear conversion. Wouldn't make too much sense to do that and then cover them up with blackouts, huh?? LOL

Anyways,
To answer a few questions - they dim the light just as much as a set of regular blackouts, which means your night visibility is pretty poor. I never drove with them at night, I always took them off.

easySPEED, man, I hate you for saying that!! I hate hate hate....nah, Im kidding Having different taste is what its all about, otherwise it'd be pretty boring and pointless to hang out here!

I don't have any pics with the bights on, but I'll see what I can do. Basically, I need to see if I can still find those covers, being that I've relocated around the world since I last used them...LOL

That all being said, I personally liked them better than the regular GTS ones. I had a pair of those too, and never liked the fit or the look. Plus, these can't fly off during highway driving, which the other ones are prone to do!
However, these weren't my favorite appearance mod either so I haven't exactly been missing them since I stopped using them a year or so ago....
