I just went an looked at a car. it's was a 89 RS, 5 speed. 73K original miles.

It's a dark grey, but the interesting thing is it looked like there was a red pinstripe running above the ground effects, and some lighter stripes above that

it was dark outside so I'm going back to see the car in better light, but I didn't know if anybody had seen anything like that before

 

Someone probably just added them on, the stripes look good on camaros.

 

It did look nice, so nice I was wondering if it was a factory job

 

I see no reason a buyer couldn't have had them added at the dealership.

As for FACTORY original? Dunno. If you find some RPO codes for the stripes, run that & the RS RPO codes through the compnine website, and see if any come back. If ones does, your golden. If not? That may only indicate that VIN car isn't their system yet.

 

The fact that it is a 5 speed just screams buy...

it's got a couple issues... the AC doesn't work, the hatch won't lock, and paint on the top and hood is faded, the dash looks like it's spend 20 years outside, and there's one small dime sized spot of rust on the roof,

but.... the interior is very clean (except for the dash) and the body is amazingly straight, the engine sounds like the day it was new. When I went to go look at it yesterday for some reason the headlights weren't working, so I couldn't take it for a test drive, but The guy is going to figure out why that is and I'll go back to get it. If he can't ger them working, I want the car anyway, we'll just negotiate a lower price and I'll figure it out myself

You can get a roll of pin strip tape comes with two lines you can cut one off and use the other one.Take a picture of it if you can.

I have never seen that before no clue if its oem or not.

 

Its not original, but would look nice with the red stripe and maybe 2 or 3 of the pin stripes.

 

I like it, I'll probably repaint the car, but I'd like to so something like that again.

you're right, the red looks great, but I wouldn't mind of there were fewer of the other stripes

 

Im sure those stripes will come off with a heat gun and the tip of your fingernail if you want to experiment with what you like before you repaint it.

 

are you saying they can be taken off, and then put back on again?

If not, does anybodyu know where to get something like that aftermarket? I have grown to really like the look of them, and would hate to nose them to a repaint

 

you can buy rolls of "pin striping" tape at Orielly's, your local body shop should have it too.

 

i don't think the odds are good for me getting 12 stripes the length of the car to lay right and look good. I'd rather buy it all in one thick roll, I think that's the way this was made

 

Vinyl is a 1 shot deal. It can be taken off, with no damage left behind. Only "damage" you could get, is if the surrounding, uncovered paint sun fades, then what was under the stripe will still be bright & unfaded.

But no.....It can't be taken off & reapplied.

Any decent sign shop could make you any kind of vinyl stripes or even graphics. I made my wife's that way, then later we had the whole car stripped & painted.

 

You buy 1 roll, then cut it to the correct length as you go. No way to apply just 2 decals, 1 for each side, of 6 stripes each.

 

wow, i've never applied stripes before... you mean what is on my car is 12 stripes, perfectly spaced and parralell, almost all the way around the car?
i'm impressed at somebody's skill and patience.

 

I think (i know) I misunderstood that you were referring to the 12 sections, I was looking at the red....fascia, fender, fx, door, fx. quarter, bumper..... 6 sections per side.

The black stripes were 1 wide piece, cut into individual horizontal stripes, on 1 piece of paper. Or screenprinted, making 1 long roll cut into 6 sections as they were applied. Most likely the screen print method.

 

ok, that makes more sense... where's a good place to buy striping like that?
