Guys with PIN ON Hood...Where did you place your pins?

Looking for some pictures with the hood on and off to see where the pins are mounted.

Gonna try and get my 3 inch Harwood hood put on this week. Want to see where everyone mounts their pins.

they say the put the pins where the rubber hood stops are for the front, if your gonna do a 4 pin then i dont know where they put the back ones, i might be getting a Cervini's 3 inch lift off cowl and am in search of the proper way to install the pins lol

Re: Guys with PIN ON Hood...Where did you place your pins?

those are some mean looking cars

sorry to semi jack the O.P.'s thread, but ive never delt with a pin down hood, how safe are they to run on a regularly driven car, i cant really say daily driven but it does get taken out about 3 times a week

it will also be traveling at about 70 mph for 20-30 minutes atleast once a month, and i will probably only be running front hood pins unless you guys tell me it would be better to run backs too

some people might think its stupid for me to run a cowl hood on my camaro as it's stock only with an open element on the TBI, it got a best of 16.7 in the 1/4 which i hate, but my wife "allowed" me some of our tax money to play with my car, and im finding some good deals on exterior pieces before paint i just cant pass up, and depending on how much money i have left i will either be rebuilding my tired 305 or dropping a 350 into it(hopefully a 350) i was originally thinking LT1, but idk if i will have the funds

and sorry again for jacking this thread

Re: Guys with PIN ON Hood...Where did you place your pins?

Well if there's nothing holding the rear of the hood down (like hinges?) you need hood pins on the back.

A trick I use that helps alot.

You'll need to get them so that the hole for the pin is level on both sides of the car and that the hood lines up with the fenders. From there you will almost certainly have some slack in it somewhere. Even if you dont have much, air gets in those headlight buckets and buffets things around. I use pieces of hose (rubber heater hose) cut to length to make the hood fit tight against the cotter pin, so it doesnt move. Remember the pin only holds the hood on the top side, the bumpers on the front will probably help hold the front side, but a little extra support that's fine tuned to perfectly match the fenders is a good idea IMO.

Nothing unsafe about it. I'd say it's way safer than just using the stock latch. Just dont forget to reinstall them when you put the hood back on the car.

Also, make sure you can lift it off by yourself. Unless you're just going with pins on the front. I grab at the front headlight bucket and the cowl and can just lift it and set it on the roof. Awkward but doable.

Re: Guys with PIN ON Hood...Where did you place your pins?

Thanks, i guess ill be going with 4 pins as it is a completely lift off hood

anybody have a thread link or website with good details on how to install the pins, or has anybody used Dzus's or the MR.Gasket lockers, im thinking about doing Mr.Gasket lockers on the front and Dzus's on the back but idk how the flush mount Dzus's work or if i can even use them to do it

Re: Guys with PIN ON Hood...Where did you place your pins?

A friend of mine had the locking pins... he said they were frustrating as hell. I suppose if you have the key on your keychain it wont be that big of a deal, but it does seem like it would get annoying after a while to me.

What about using 4 Dzus or 4 Aerocatches, instead of the standard pins?

both very good points, i really like the dzus pins because they are flush, but im not 100% sure my hood wont get stolen due to me having neighbors who have parties with a ton people they dont even know(i find beer bottles around and even on my car, so u can tell they dont respect property), thats why i was thinking lockers, but the dzus might confuse them enough lol

Re: Guys with PIN ON Hood...Where did you place your pins?

At least with Areocatches, you can buy locking ones. Just typically with Dzus you see like 4 across the front, 4 across (each) side & 4 across the rear. So I wonder...Are they too small/weak for just 4 to hold a hood good? The Areocatches are pretty good sized, so I doubt there would be much problem with them. But 4 wouldn't be very cheap!

Re: Guys with PIN ON Hood...Where did you place your pins?

thats another good point, i guess i will look into the Areocatches, i just want it clean looking, not that i dont like visible pins, but i dont have a motor to back up a lift off cowl hood YET lol, so i would like to keep it clean looking

Re: Guys with PIN ON Hood...Where did you place your pins?

Ok, running Mr. Gasket Lockers on the front of a hood as the only means to hold the front down is a big no no as the Tech Rep told me, he said if you are not using a latch in conjunction with the hood locks they will not hold at highway speeds, so i guess if i want lockers they will be placed in the rear corners and regular pins will be in place up front

Here is where I had my dzus pins on my old 88. I had 3 tabs welded on each side. Here is a link. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/atta...rics-motor.jpg

Re: Guys with PIN ON Hood...Where did you place your pins?

I dont have any pictures. Sold the car. But i would use 4 pins up front. When i first installed my 4inch glastek i only use one pin on all 4 corners, and at even 55 mph the center of the hood would bow up allowing air under it. I bolted 2 pieces of angle aluminum on eather side of the hood latch in the front. Ran them from the rad support to he headlight bar with the pin in the middle of the angle. Just set the pin height so its realy snug and ur good to go.

btw alwayse use pins on the back. Lost 2 of the pins at the track one time so i didn't put any on the back. Passed a big truck on the way home and hood lifted 4 to 5 inches in the back. Scary sight with a brand new hood.

Re: Guys with PIN ON Hood...Where did you place your pins?

looks like ill be attempting it soon as well, picked up my hood yesterday from cobrakiller1989, so ill be doing non locking plush flush Aerocatches(thats a mouth full) in the front with some Mr.Gasket lockers in the back, i cant afford locking aerocatches or 2 sets of them so i went a little cheaper on the back pins lol
