Re: Post Your Side Molding Delete Pics!

yeah, that makes sense when you pull into a nice spot and no one is one either side.it works great until SOMEONE PARKS RIGHT BESIDE YOU...............DING.....its inevitable

funny story,i just got my 1984 berlinetta painted, cut and buffed, black on black ,stripe delete(maybe in about 1996-1997)man,it looked sick.i took the door moldings off(didn't put them on after paint)
so i pull into the bank, right in the middle of the parking spot and no one on either side.im gathering up my bills, wallet etc and admiring my car in the reflection of the nice clean bank windows.
low and behold some guy pulls in in a brand new Cadillac on the passenger side and what do you know,he glances over at me(cant see me because of the tint)then ,just like the world is his oyster
he flings his door open and it HITS MY FRESHLY PAINTED CAR RIGHT WERE THOSE MOLDINGS WOULD'VE BEEN.....i feel that "ice water in the veins feeling",you all know it im sure.

well,i get out of my car in maybe a quarter of a second and im around the other side.and i proceed to kick his door and not lightly either, you know it was enough to
notice my size 12's impression.there's fire in my eyes ( im not a little guy,6'4"i was in concrete construction at the time and ripped)so.... i rap on his window
and in a calm reserved voice i say "GET THE **** OUT OF YOUR CAR NOW............"

the look on this clowns face,i almost laughed even with the tragic events that had just unfolded.....he had the classic "deer in the headlights look "or "my time is up"

ive never seen a Cadillac disappear that fast until the cts's came along,if that stupid jackass would've got out of his car..........?

so,in my opinion the moldings are just fine.funny my trans am doesn't have them NOW but after i paint it,its gonna have them.
it looks better without them IMO but even when you idiot proof something, they just make a new and improved IDIOT.

I think if your car doesn’t look bone stock, factory.. (custom paint, custom hood, aftermarket wheels, no decals, etc) and if the paint is really nice and the doors are super straight, not having door moldings can look good. I don’t think the IROC and Formula decals look as good without the moldings. They look a little out of place on their own IMO.

I think they do protect the doors a little bit, but not much. They do help a door that might have imperfections in that horizontal body crease look straighter. If your doors are really perfect and the paint is very high quality with little to know orange peel it looks sharp and clean. All the Grand Nationals I see are repainted and don’t have the moldings. I think all the little dings and waves in the doors stand out more. A guy has a 100k mile one with original paint with the moldings and I think it’s looks “more put together”. But that’s because those cars are all trying to look bone stock.

If the car looks all original except for the door moldings removed and has a quicky paint job with some close up evidence of overspray, drips and orange peel, then it stands out as a half *** re-paint. The moldings would help it.

I will say the new Hawks pre cut moldings are awesome. My paint guy was highly skeptical and said he would see how they come out. If he didn’t like them he’d get some NOS and paint them. He actually liked the re-productions better. Said they were easy to work with, they come prepped in the correct primer for your paint color, and match the car better than the molded plastic ones since you can paint them to perfectly match the car. The NOS ones were injected with the factory color and never really matched perfect and had a dullness to them. Said he wished they had those reproductions back in the day.

depends on the car..

I like 'em. Just painted my car and I left 'em on. Breaks up that wide open door. That being said I've seen several really sharp looking cars without them too. I'll admit I don't care for the early style black door molding though.

Yeah, I’d have a tough time putting the black molding back on after a repaint..
