My clear coat is peeling

Stupid Van Nuys paint. It just started in November. Finally lost a chunk.

Is there anything I can do to slow/halt/fix this problem?

Thanks in advance, guys.

Re: My clear coat is peeling

I have the same problem! 99% of my clearcoat is in good shape but I have a few areas (one being on the hood such as yours) that is peeling. I think the only way to fix is to have the hood repainted and have new clear coat applied.

I guess I'll start experimenting with auto paint. There are lot's of u-paint-it threads here that I've read. Thanks for your input #1.

But Nick's [local friend] Norwood car is in waay better shape. My car doesn't see 10% of the harsh paint mutilating activities that his does.

I've been looking to paint it anyway, it's just bad time to do it. I photoshopped 40+ color combinations in different lines on the car. The did use stupid paint.

Same, I guess. I've been looking around in the outskirts of my tiny area at a few body shops.

I can't paint it until i get the missing gfx from where the previous owner ran over a parking "stopper". [I guess.] It's been a challenge.

I like your headlights, btw. I just read that thread a while ago.

That's an easy fix, if that is the only spots on your car...

It's the worst spot.
My spoiler is from an earlier car and it needs paint, but that's the spot that is the worst

Re: My clear coat is peeling

All you need to do is sand past the clear coat till you hit color
(do not sad past the color!) once all the spots of milky clear are gone and you have a visible flat like color... prep and clear, you can use rattle can clear but make sure its enamel based clear, I personally have on some of my daily drivers and never had a problems with it for as long as iv owned them, however its not at all like the automotive clear coat... Im not going in deepth as to how to sand what grit to use, clears etc all that you can find on Google...

Re: My clear coat is peeling

Had exactly the same thing on mine. Unfortunately it started on the roof and within a month it had flaked all the way down the sail panels. In the end I just bit the bullet and had the whole car repainted.

Re: My clear coat is peeling

I might give that sand and spray trick a try. However I will hopefully have a job in the next month so that I can save up to have door/hail dings removed from my car and get it repainted the factory red metallic. I wonder if they make stencils so that I can have my Iroc-Z decals and stripes painted on my car so they will hopefully last longer than those stickers that I have now!
Hood (there is also now a foot long chunk missing as well)

Re: My clear coat is peeling

Best thing to do in this situation is to sand her down and paint her up. I prefer using darker colored and thicker paints with no clear coat. Solves the problem of clear coat peeling and looks nice. The flat look is becoming more and more popular theses days.

been a custom painter for a while and flat is not that popular 2 stage or clear coat base coat is way better than single stage peeling happens with cheap stuff spend a lil more in the long run would be better nothing last forever tho keep that in mind

Not all the manufacturers fault, you can thank the EPA and others for forcing the paint manufacturers to remove lead from paint. The new paint was different in characteristics and the auto manufacturers didn't apply it properly. Paint manufacturers weren't sure of paint characteristics either. Every manufacturer was repainting cars in the 90's. I'd be willing to say that if someone didn't buy their third gen brand new there's a good chance that the paint isn't original anyway. Especially if it still looks decent after 20 years. Repaints done properly are hard to detect, unless you sand it down. JMO

87 IROC, I'm afraid you're going to need paint on that hood. Better take care of that before ole' Mr Rusty comes calling.

Re: My clear coat is peeling

I prefer shiny as well but also if its done right the flat look, looks great. But flat is more popular than what people think. I mean I'm not trying to say its super popular everywhere but also flat doesn't hold up in the elements very well. I am currently deciding on what color to paint my firebird. Any ideas??

Re: My clear coat is peeling

There is a guy named Lee at G13 that had semi gloss clear on a pearl. Looked good just like you said, he said something about a stain that he couldn't clean off. His car is shiney now.
