Carport vs Garage

I have an 87 IROC that to the best of my knowledge (or at least by in large) has always been garage kept. The paint is in very good but not perfect condition, and the body is rust free. I'm taking a job in a new city and the best house that I found in my price range has a two car carport with the sides covered. If I also get a good car cover, and store the car in the Winter, do you guys think this provides adequate protection? I figure I'll be safe from UV sun damage, but I'll lose the climate controlled garage I've always had, and I'm concerned about corrosion from the fluctuating temps and just being outside. Thanks guys.

In WV, you are looking at a real problem. Are you renting or buying? Either way, could you convert the entrance into a kind of "Barn-door" arrangement? In AZ where I live, the sun is our biggest problem. You can always tell a "carport car" by the fact the drivers seat will be less (Or more) faded than the passengers seat. Or the rear of the cars paint is more faded than the hood.

Just renting for the time being, I was hoping a car cover in addition to the carport would keep the sun damage to a minimum but that's something to consider. I may end up just storing the car. Thanks.

Re: Carport vs Garage

I use a car cover, and all I have is a $89 "canopy" if you will. I just had my car painted last year, and I'm very particular about it. But, I can't afford to move to a house with garage, and so I must just do what I can.

My car cover doesn't allow any light in at all, and is waterproof as well. Not anything fancy, think I got it a Walmart. But it looks like Tyvek sort of. I just unscrew antenna and cover.

My main issue is leaves/sap ... and kids. There I'd think your issue would be snow - as long as the carport doesn't cave in under the snow (which if it didn't this past year it probably won't), I don't see an issue. We all just do what we can.

Re: Carport vs Garage

I just realized that collector car policies, i.e. Grundy, Hagerty, etc., require the car to be either garage kept or in an enclosed storage building. I have an agreed value policy with Grundy, so it looks like I'm either storing the car or looking for a new house. I should have remembered that earlier.

Re: Carport vs Garage

Yep, they all require a garage, limited mileage, and a daily driver car that is not older than 5 years. That's why I don't have anything but liability. They suck!
