What's it Worth? 1987 IROC Convertible, 5 speed TPI, triple black, brass hat car?
What's it Worth? 1987 IROC Convertible, 5 speed TPI, triple black, brass hat car?
Hi Everyone,
Too many toys in the garage and I need to sell my 1987.5 IROC-Z Convertible. What is this vehicle worth? A president of the Camaro club quoted me $13k back before the market bottomed out. Curious what current market value is so I can price it accordingly when it's put for sale:
Year: 1987½
Model: Camaro Z28 IROC-Z Convertible (20th Anniversary)
Options: Police Package, 5-speed TPI, PW, PDL
Colors: Triple Black
Mileage: 86,2XX
This is a BRASS HAT car as it was internally ordered by an executive at AC Delco when it was part of GM. (This is verified by a copy of the window sticker.) Car has been documented by GM Media Archives and I have both a packet of emails between GM and myself as well as the actual emails still in my folder. Car is currently a #3 car. Fine to drive today and worthwhile fully restoring down the road.
UPDATE: Here's a link to the ad on AutoTrader:

So... what's this car worth?

a picture says more then a 1000 words
.dont care how special the car is, if its a a rustbucket/wifebeater/moonshinerunner it aint gonna be worth much.
if it looks in good condition its half of the price.
price depends of.
looks
milage
drives
backinfo/documentation.
prices over here in belgium even change with what the time of the year.
in the spring nobody is sellign because everybody is driving their cars again.
in the fall they see that they actually didnt drive the car that much, its in the way in the garage, and they want to get rid of it. so a lot of sporty cars and convertibles come up for sale back then.
also 25 years or older are oldtimer cars over here and the prices ( specially for american cars ) skyrocket then because you dont have to pay taxes anymore for it.
on another note I saw a 89 trans am ( non turbo ) go for 4500 over here.
so evn then prices still are depending on what people want to give for this type of cars.

If your looking for top dollar this is the wrong site to solicit advise and or buyers. There are to many guys like me that remember when these things came out and have been hording parts and are baised due to the quantity of cars built. It is worth what soe one will pay for it, just dont take the reception you get here for true value.

To the OP, without pics, it's impossible to determine the value of the car, why do people always ask the value yet fail to provide pics? I highly, highly doubt you've got a B4C RPO on an '87 model that's a convertible, if you get my drift.
Also, the fact that it's an executive car means nothing. If I climbed the ranks of GM and bought a car and passed it on like any other used car, would you pay more because it used to be owned by my no-name executive self just because I have a title behind my name?

BTW, this forum contains reference to a special cam (GM P/N 14093640) that was "used on a Police Package RPO LM1" (quoting the thirdgen thread). Here's the link:

The "Brass Hat Status" is just another possible topic of discussion for the new owner.
It's a neat car, but I've got too many cars and would like to thin the herd a bit. But I have no interest in being lowballed. Will sell the car for a fair price to both parties or I'll simply continue to garage it as insurance is kind on a 23-year-old car that only goes on the road on sunny days. If possible, I really would enjoy seeing it go to an appreciative new home!

Here's the link on AutoTrader and apologies for the limited pics. I'm waiting for nice weather to take high-res shots of the entire car as well as the interior and engine compartment. (The TPI engine is a feast for the eyes!)

Well, whoever told you that only 120 G92 cars were built in 1987 was wrong. According to the White Book, 10,533 G92 cars were sold in 1987. Add to that every 350 based IROC-Z in 1987. The RPO wasn't present on the 350 cars because every option that made up the G92 was mandatory on the 350 cars.
There was no police package Camaro convertible in 1987. Just because someone works at GM or even Chevrolet, doesn't mean they know anything. It's a job to most of them. Was the IROC-Z used as a police car? yes. I remember seeing them in MA and other states in the northeast when I was growing up. It was a pursuit vehicle, much like the B4C. I cannot accept someone stating that they have a police package just because the car is equipped the same as one. There are plenty of people that have 1985 + cars without air, PW,PL, etc and the car is not a 1LE. It's optioned the same, but if it doesn't carry the code, then it isn't the car!
Brass hat means nothing. It just means that an employee drove the car for about 3k miles before the car was sold at discounted prices. That's it.
Value = who knows. Without somebody being able to scrutinize the car, it's condition and options, you'll get prices anywhere from $3500 to $18k. It means nothing. get it appraised or compare it to other sales locally.
