not saying I have "the best black paint job"....but in order to make black look REALLY good....get used to blocking! Prime, block, prime block, prime block....thats the best way to get your panel straight...especially for black.

Then, block the clear. I blocked my hood with a paint stick and 800 grit. Just make sure you have enough clear

Woww that's a bad *** paint job... I'm sure you get a lot of look @s!! And of course you have to love the hood. What I did was have my friend do two coats of primer and I sanded with wet 400 grit by hand... and later I did it all around again with 800... my friend was like "It looks like you waxed your primer" haha.. it reflects things!!.. but blocking will definitely do a better job getting the surface flatter than my hand..
People have told me the result will depend more on your prep/primer than the paint

I am in the middle of blocking now, this is why I went with 3 coats of clear. I epoxy primed the car then speckle coated it and blocked the car like 5 times, then laid down Dupont sealer. I just laid on Ghost SS stripes in pearle on Friday, will post pics on Mon or Tue.

Re: Who has the best black paint job?
not a alot of people realize it...but block is your #1 thing do to if you want a straight panel. I used a total of 4 gallons of high build primer on my dad's 63 SS (probably blocked off 3 gallons!)....straight as an arrow though

Re: Who has the best black paint job?
Blocking is the key, and using stright long boards to get a clean wave free panel. You need to identify the high and low spots and remove them if you want a great end result. Sand marks will show their ugly faces if you do not work your way up and let the material shrink and check it again. If you do not do the prep work correctly it will be like my uncle said, "your just putting lipstick on a pig"

Wow those are some beautiful jobs right there!!... Ok, so now blocking is going to be what I'm going to focus on doing.
But now what intrigues me is the clear?,.. how many coats?.. fine grit sand between them?... what brand?
I want to go buy the clear at Napa or Sherly Williams
Thank you for your replies!!

I'll chime in for my buddy jason. black88cam https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/member.php?u=25213
he hasnt been on since Jan. always wins best of shows, etc.. Ive done his emblems. some stainless door sills and little other odds n ends on his car.
The deepest black Ive seen. These pic's just dont do it justice. You could shave in his black paint job out in the sun.

I am getting there, still have cutting residual on the car, need to glaze it to remove the haze. I love how you cant see the SS stripes on the hood from the side, if the light doesnt hit them they kind of shadow in.

Re: Who has the best black paint job?
Thank you Sir, I read on your post about Jasons car (very nice car and paint) you said you did the emblems and door sills? if I read that right we need to talk about some stuff for my car. I have spent a lot of time on my paint & body (about 100 hours so far) you can see the depth so far and it is not done yet, I would be very intersted in sills and any other parts you do.

Painted her in my garage...took about 2 years after all the work.
Sanding...sanding...and more sanding. Let's say I will never attempt this again!

Here's mine. I'm not gonna claim it's the best but it's pretty good considering it's never been completely repainted all at once since new, just as needed to maintain it.

Don't know why they came out small though...
