Car ID Please! (Newbie Camaro "Owner")

http://www3.sympatico.ca/e-man/vehic...ro/campics.htm
I have been told on this board that the Camaro RS' weren't made until '85, though the person whom I'll be buying this Camaro off of says it's an '82 RS. I coulda swore that they existed, but I'm completely new to the Camaro world...up until now, I've used a Corsica to get back and forth to college up until now(it's a..well, it's a Chev, at least), 2.8 MPFI...and ugly. I've figured it's time to treat myself to a real car...if you guys could take a look, let me know what you think the car is, as well as if it looks in decent shape (for the $1300 or so Canadian I'm paying for it), your opinions would be much appreciated. I imagine I'll be spending a lot of time here, so I'll thank you all in advance for any help ya give me.

it's either a 1982 Camaro Z/28, or a '82 sport coupe with a '82-'84 Z28 nose, hood, and ground effects. My reasoning for the second is the fact that there is a "CAMARO" badge on the fenders. also their appears to be a Z/28 badge on the lower dash. it has the sport steering wheel too. and fairly fresh paint? the headlight buckets are body colored, they shouldn't be, and the liscense plate bracket in back is painted. the grille is body color too.

Maaco?

my guess is that it's a Z/28. a bit of a sad one, but, with a f-body there is always potential.

Sure. This should be on the H/R board though.

Thats not an RS, since they came out in 89 although I think there was limited production in either 87 or 88, or both, in certain areas. Thats not 1 of them though, its most likely a Sport Coupe with ext. mods to look like 1, maybe a Z28, check the VIN too.

check the underside of the car, especially the rear cross member behind the rear bumper. if that is rotted out or there is a lot of rust underneith, run away screaming. if the underside looks ok and you like the car, then go for it.

Seems to me it is a 82-83 Cross fire Z. But when were the rear window wipers available? This car has one. If I were you I would pass unless I had serious body work experience.

If it is an 82, it has probably had the GFX and the motor added to it. It looks like it is decent and the price is good. That equates to about $700 American for you Yanks and in Canada that is not a bad deal. Make sure you sheck the floor really well and cheack the healiner for signs of leaking. Feel the carpets to see if they are damp and check to see if the firewall is in good shape. It looks like a fair prce but I don't know how the motor sounds and how good the transmission is.

It might be a 3sp or a 4sp. If it is a 4sp then really listen to see if it is in good order and check the fluid. I have been though a few of them in both of my Camaros.

I say buy it. Even if things don't work out, you could part the car out and get your money back.

Is it possible for you to post the VIN? That will help a lot.

Did you guys notice the rust in this picture?

I would stay away from this one. It looks to need a lot of work. The interior is also pretty rough looking.

Yeah, body work is doable, as long as the engine is sound...does it look like THAT much work, though? No VIN number yet, I'm working on it.

Don't do it-it's a mutt. It also has rust issues-if you can see the rust on the fenders, there is a whole lot more you can't see. If you do consider buying it, take a good look underneath car for rot and rust and body damage. I'm approx. 99% sure this car has been wrecked. Definitely pay the $ to run a carfax report-you won't regret it;even if the records are clean you've erased any previous doubt in your mind about this car.

if you really want to know what the car was originally.. go to a chevy dealership with the vin, look really innocent and "i don't know what i want to do" kinda look, ask the parts manager real nice to run the vin for you to see what codes the car came with.. or if they're still in the "glove box" in the car.. check 'em out.. then you know what it's suppose to be.. (my guess is that it was a bottom of the line feeder that got damaged and the guy decided to put in a new motor.. and wtf are those little round rear lights on the rear bumper?.. that sure isn't factory.. and the gfx isn't..
it's a project car.. i'm guessing that it will need new quarter pannels and some engine tuning.. but for that price?.. u could probably find one in better shape for 3000$ (cnd funds) and not have to worry about all that stuff.. just be patient.. pays off in the long run..
but if you don't want to pay something like that.. well.. that's as good as you're going to get for under 2000$ that isn't an autopac write off.
