SS Hood on a 'Bird?
How do you think it would look?
I'm thinking about putting the SS scoop from a 2nd gen on my hood. The damn thing ain't closing over my new intake. I don't want a ram air hood.
Do you think it would look kickass? Give me your opinions and/or other possible ideas.

Ive seen it done to a camaro, and it looks real nice, I ordered the scoop from jc whitney and everything, but no body shop would put that scoop on and warinity the work so i changed my mind, I dunno how it would look on a bird, it would look different, try having someone photoshop it

Yeah I just want this car to look different, but intimidating as well. I was thinking about ordering one from jc. Do you still have yours Mac? If so, how much would you sell it for? BTW, I know it would be hard to photoshop this, but if anyone wants to attempt it, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

if u just want different, u could always just go for say a second generation style shaker hood. I've seen those a couple times and they look relly bad *** . Also saw a bird that had second gen style ground fx, well the front and rear tire fender flares, and i believe the spoiler, it looked really neat.
Your talking about the 80-81 Z28 Cowl hood. There were no SS's in the later years, and even the see's that they did have ( 70-72 ) were only a performance package with a setof stripes thrown in. dont get a 78-79 tear drop scoop as its not functional. the ones from 80-81 actually have a solenoid that opens the scoop up when you go to full throttle. go to Nastyz28.com and then to the messages boards, then to the swap meet section usually there are a couple for sale there or ask with a WTB: and Im sure there will be more than enough to choose from readily available
I may be old school or something but Camaro hoods don't belong on a Firebird and a Firebird hood does not belong on a Camaro. SS=Camaro
RamAir2=Firebird
I love the RamAir2 on birds but it looks gay on Camaros and also the otherway around.

I have a friend with the RamAir hood on his Camaro, and i assure you, he is far from gay. Do what YOU want, man. If YOU think it looks good, do it. This is your car. Do not listen to what ANYONE says. Follow your own gut
78-79 hoods arent functional http://www.geocities.com/patgizz/scottwood3.jpg How ever if you really want you can remove the plate and make it semi-functional. The 80-81 hoods http://www.geocities.com/patgizz/fannin2.jpg hood is. Its basically liek the hood on the formulas, and has a flapper with a solenoid where if you go full throttle it opens the flapper and becomes a full cowl hood.

I've got a 79 Z-28 with the scoop you are talking about. As far as I know you should be able to cut out the hole in the front and make the scoop functional. I've never had this scoop off, but I'm planning on doing this when I redo the car. It would basically be the same as a new SS camaro hood. I plan on making this functional by getting my hands on an air cleaner like the kind which were used on the old cowl induction hoods. It seals to the hood using weatherstripping and keeps engine heat out.
This should work on a TBI or carburated car.
I plan on getting one of the K@N air cleaners with the open lid for this also. Maybe you can get someone to photoshop this for you. I plan on blending this scoop to be seamless also, which will resemble a new SS hood even more. It might look good if the lines of the scoop flow with the hood on a third gen. Hey, here's another one. What about putting Z-28 hood blisters on a firebird. Ok, everyone can start griping now.

Yeah, I hope they will. The pontiac hood has a big ridge that runs down the center. The SS scoop comes to a point in front and is about 8" shorter than the length of the hood. If I place the front of it close to the bumper and raise the scoop a bit, I may be able to visually eliminate the ridge and it'll hopefully flow with the lines of the hood. That's the plan, anyway.
Good ideas for the air induction, btw. I haven't even started planning that yet. If I end up putting this scoop on, I'll probably do something like that, maybe use a solenoid somewhere-a ram air effect would be an added benefit.

Now the Real question is - will the scoop in question get rid of your problem? Those scoops are real low, if you can't close your hood now because of your intake - you would need to take some good measurements to make sure you don't cut a hole in your hood for nothing.
Other than that, I think it would be cool to see - and definitely different. If you do it, make sure you send me a pic for the Thirdgen Appearance Guide Im working on!

Clearance might be an issue. I was thinking in terms of my 79, which has a lot of clearance over the air cleaner. For this to be functional it would have to be basically directly over the air cleaner. This will work, but the only other problem I see is possibly not getting enough air through the hole. But I have some ideas about fixing this. This is basically a factory setup on the 79 which was never made functional. There is even an opening in the bottom of the hood which is probably generic for the Trans Ams and Camaros with the functional intakes.
no, cowls don't bother me because they are generic, the SS is a Camaro and the RAM AIR is firebird...hence my thought. The firebird and camaro are separate cars, Parts mayfit between them but I don't like the way it looks. Would you put a mustang parts on a Firebird or Camaro...no. Now stop coming on thinging you are all big and bad....that was my opinin and that was what this whole post was about. **** OFF.

You don't have to like the way it looks. In fact, I don't give a flying **** whether you do or not. But at least try to give people constructive criticism. Don't just say it's gay and doesn't belong on there because it came from a Camaro. My six speed came from a Camaro, but its going in my car anyway. Would I put a Mustang parts on my car?...if someone gave me 4 brand new Cobra wheels for free...hell yeah I'd put them on my car. I thing this scoop will look pretty ****ing good. But that's just my opinin.

I saw a camaro with the 2nd gen scoop on it one time. It looked terrible. I would imagine that on a bird, it would look even worse..... but who knows.... why not buy the ss hood, have it cut for the bird and be done? Could someone photoshop an ss hood onto a bird?
