1989 GTA Pinewood Derby car

Finally beginning build on our PWD car cloning my GTA. (yes, I do have a Formula hood on mine) Tricky to stay within the scout specified wheelbase. Starting version2 tonight with longer, correct, frontend. The will be coated with PPG metallic flame red. foglights and taillights will be functional. This is a blast.

Re: 1989 GTA Pinewood Derby car

Looks way better than the CNC 6061 one "I" built years ago for the Unlimited Class in my local Autocriss club for the year end party. Only rules were non-powered (gravity only) and a 1lb weight limit.

My boss programmed the CNC mill that I ran at work, so I didn't exactly have control over how un-close the profile came out. I just did the set-up & ran the mill.

Re: 1989 GTA Pinewood Derby car

My wheels & tires were CNCd on a Lathe out of 6061 & the black "tires" were Delrin. Afterward, I realizede I should have been so "accurate" in making them wide for looks, but narrow for less rolling resistance. I wanted to CNC the "tires" into smaller diameters except for 1 thin section, so that they still looked wide, but only the thin part was in actual contact with the track for a smaller footprint.

Did you CNC that? Any way you can reduce the tire footprint on those?

Re: 1989 GTA Pinewood Derby car

Nope, all Dremel and hand sanding...about 5hrs..Cant touch the wheels per our packs rules, but I am moving the body forward about 1/2" on the next one to achieve the right front look on V2. Have to run the predetermined wheelbase. Putting LEDs in the driving and taillights. Thought about getting a recordable soundchip out of a greeting card and doing motor sounds too. Gotta stay under 5oz total though.

Re: 1989 GTA Pinewood Derby car

Impressive work. Your hand carving turned out way better than my CNC work. I wasn't exactly happy with it, but the programming was free as well as the machine time, so I wasn't gonna get picky. I just had to pay for the block of aluminum.

Whatever weight you add with a battery & LEDs, can you carve the bottom out to the weight back down? That is why my bottom is carved out. Multiple CNC passes to get the weight down.

Lots of things you can do with wheels. On trick is to hone the hubs. Second is to raise one wheel up. One year I, I mean my kids of course, made a 63 split window vette and a Ford Daytona coupe. Vette win four trophys, and coupe 1. Also Polish the burs of the nails.

Re: 1989 GTA Pinewood Derby car

Thanks jchaussee, In our pack, all four wheels have to have contact and they are very strict on messing too much with the wheels. Planning to hone the hubs, and polish the axles...we are also permitted to only use graphite as a lubricant. One thing I will make certain of is the straightness of the axles. Bought a few kits that had slightly bent axles...
BTW--I will be going thru Bellingham next month. My company has a HQ there and Burnaby.

Hi 86tainmo,

When would you need it? Not worried about the money, just time....I assume you're in Missouri?

No hurry really they just had one and he did the batmobile. But they are planning a "fun" race between local packs in March or April which would be cool but its totally up to you...I showed him the pics of yours and he didnt believe me that they are of a real pinewood derby car lol
